UM, I'M HEATHER MILLER AND, UH, MY HUSBAND KURT AND I STARTED THE BUDDY LEAGUE IN 2002.

WE STARTED WITH 10 PLAYERS AND THE LAST SEASON THAT WE WERE ABLE TO PLAY, WE HAD 165 PLAYERS.

UM, I ALWAYS TELL 'EM THE KIDS.

WE, WE LOST SIX PLAYERS.

NOW WE LOST ANOTHER PLAYER AT CHRISTMAS.

UM, AND WE WILL, UM, TRADE HIM TO THE ANGELS WHEN WE GET TO START OVER, UM, IN THE FALL, IN THE FALL.

UM, WE DO THAT EVERY TIME WE LOSE A PLAYER AND THEY WILL BE ADDED TO OUR, OUR BANNER.

UM, BUT I TELL OUR VOLUNTEERS EVERY SATURDAY THAT IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT BASEBALL, IT'S ABOUT GIVING THESE KIDS THE TIME OF THEIR LIFE, BECAUSE FOR MANY OF THEM, THEY'RE NOT GUARANTEED, UM, A REGULAR, UH, UM, STANDARD, UM, AMOUNT OF TIME IN THIS WORLD.

SO, UM, THAT'S WHAT WE TRY TO MAKE EVERY SATURDAY.

EVERY SATURDAY IS VERY IMPORTANT IN THE SCHEME OF THESE KIDS' LIVES.

UM, THEY COME FROM ALL OVER.

UH, THERE'S NOT A LOT OF THINGS FOR KIDS TO DO THAT HAVE SPECIAL

NEEDS.

AND WE'RE SO THANKFUL THAT, UM, THE CITY OF GARLAND AND THE GARLAND PARKS DEPARTMENT HAS EMBRACED US LIKE THEY HAVE, AND WE HAVE A FIELD THAT, UM, IS, HAS BEEN MODIFIED SO THAT OUR KIDS CAN PLAY THERE AND BE SUCCESSFUL.

AND, AND, UM, DO THE THINGS THAT, UH, THE OTHER KIDS GET TO DO.

UM, LIKE I SAID, BUDDY LEAGUE IS NOT JUST ABOUT BASEBALL.

IT'S ABOUT SO MANY THINGS.

IT'S ABOUT THOSE KIDS GETTING TO BE INSIDE THE FENCE INSTEAD OF WATCHING FROM THE OUTSIDE.

AND EVERY TIME THEY HIT THE BALL, IT'S LIKE THEY'VE WON THE OLYMPICS.

SO, UM, WE HAVE VOLUNTEERS THAT COME FROM EVERYWHERE EVERY WEEK.

WE HAVE ABOUT A HUNDRED VOLUNTEERS.

UM, AND WE USE KIDS BECAUSE I THINK IT'S VERY IMPORTANT THAT KIDS BECOME NATURAL SUPPORTS.

UM, AND IT GOES A LONG, A LONG WAY FOR ACCEPTANCE AND TREATING KIDS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS.

UM, NOT AS, UH, SOMEONE TO BE AFRAID OF.

AND A LOT OF, UH, A LOT OF KIDS ARE AFRAID OF KIDS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS JUST BECAUSE THEY'RE DIFFERENT, BUT THEY KIND OF SEE THAT THERE ARE THERE, THE KIDS ARE MORE ALIKE AND MORE LIKE THEM THAN THEY ARE DIFFERENT.

SO I THINK IT GOES A LONG WAY WITH THAT.

WE GIVE SCHOLARSHIPS EVERY YEAR.

UM, WE TYPICALLY GIVE ABOUT A HUNDRED, UH, ABOUT A THOUSAND DOLLARS, UM, EVERY, EVERY SPRING SEASON TO A VOLUNTEER.

SO OVER THE LAST 20 YEARS, WE'VE, WE'VE GIVEN UP ABOUT $20,000 IN SCHOLARSHIPS.

A LOT OF OUR KIDS ARE THERAPISTS.

NOW WE'VE GOT THREE THAT ARE SPEECH THERAPISTS THAT HAVE GONE ON JUST TO GET THEIR MASTERS.

WE'VE GOT, UM, WE'VE GOT SOME THAT ARE AT AUSTIN COLLEGE.

THEY'RE GOING TO BE CA BECOME BEHAVIOR DOCTORS.

I MEAN, IT'S JUST, UM, LIKE I SAID, IT'S MORE THAN JUST BASEBALL.

UM, AND IF WITHOUT THE CITY OF GARLAND, THERE WOULD BE NOBODY LIKE, DOES ANYBODY HAVE ANY QUESTIONS FOR ME? OR SO YOU SAY YOU'RE STARTING BACK UP IN THE FALL.

WE ARE.

I MEAN, LIKE, UM, THESE KIDS ARE ALL HEALTH IMPAIRED, MY OWN, MY OWN SON INCLUDED.

UM, MANY OF THEM ARE HEALTH IMPAIRED.

WE'VE HAD TWO IN THE HOSPITAL IN INTENSIVE CARE WITH COVID.

UM, THERE, MANY OF THEM ARE UNDER 16.

UM, THEIR PARENTS ARE KEEPING THEM OUT OF SCHOOL.

UM, IT'S JUST, IT'S NOT WORTH THE RISK FOR THEM.

UM, BUT I JUST KNOW THAT BY JULY, WE'RE GOING TO HAVE HERD IMMUNITY AND WE WILL BE BACK.

I'M GOING TO SET UP A REGISTRATION FOR JU IN JULY AND WE WILL BE PLAYING IN THE FALL.

WE PLAY AT BRADFIELD FIELD NUMBER THREE.

UM, WE PLAY ON SATURDAYS.

UM, THERE ARE FIVE GAMES THERE EACH AND HOUR A PIECE.

WE, WE SEPARATE THE KIDS BY AGE.

I HAVE TWO YEAR OLDS THAT PLAY, UH, IN MY FIRST GAME ALL THE WAY TO WHAT, 67 YEAR OLD, THAT PLAYS IN MY LAST NAME.

SHE WAS IN A STATE SCHOOL FOR 43 YEARS.

AND HER SISTER CAME OUT TO THE GAME, ONE OF THE GAMES TO WATCH HER ON ANOTHER FIELD TO WATCH HER GRANDSON PLAY.

AND SHE SAID, I WISH THEY HAD HAD SOME STUFF LIKE THIS FOR MY SISTER, WHEN WAS YOUNG, UH, SHE LOVES BASEBALL AND I SAID, WELL, HOW OLD IS SHE? AND SHE SAID, WELL, SHE'S 63.

AND I SAID, WELL, IS SHE HEALTHY? AND SHE SAID, YES.

AND I SAID, THERE'S NO REASON THAT SHE CAN'T PLAY.

AND SHE, WE SIGNED HER UP AND SHE HAS BEEN PLAYING FOR THE LAST FOUR YEARS.

AND SHE IS AMAZING.

SO WE DON'T, WE DON'T TURN ANYBODY AWAY EVER.

AND YOU START WHAT TIME OF DAY? OUR FIRST GAME IS AT NINE AND OUR, THE LAST GAME ENDS ABOUT TWO 30.

THAT, THAT WAS WHAT, THAT WAS MY INTENTION AS A MOM OF A SPECIAL NEEDS KID.

AND THAT WAS, THAT WAS ONE OF THE THINGS I SET FORTH WHEN I STARTED WRITING DOWN WHAT I WANTED TO DO WHEN I, WE WERE TOLD THAT BEN WAS NOT GOING TO BE ALLOWED TO PLAY REGULAR BASEBALL ANYMORE.

AND, UM, I STARTED TO THINK ABOUT THE THINGS THAT BOTHERED ME ABOUT, ABOUT HIS LIFE AND WHAT I WANTED FOR HIM.

AND I REALIZED THAT IT WASN'T, I PROBABLY WASN'T THE ONLY MOTHER THAT FELT LIKE THAT.

AND SO I, I WAS VERY APPREHENSIVE THE FIRST SEASON THAT WE WERE NOT GOING TO HAVE ANY PLAYERS AND, AND EVERY YEAR, SINCE THEN, IT JUST HAS GOTTEN BIGGER AND BIGGER.

AND WE'RE VERY LUCKY.

OKAY.

IS THERE ANYTHING YOU NEED FROM US ON THE PARKS BOARD OR AT PARKS? IS THERE ANYTHING THAT'S ON YOUR WISHLIST? OH, WELL, THERE'S ALWAYS, THERE'S ALWAYS THINGS ON THE WISHLIST.

ONE OF OUR BIGGEST THINGS THAT WE NEED EVERY WEEK IS WATER.

UM, BECAUSE WE GIVE ALL OF THE VOLUNTEERS WATERS AND THE PLAYERS GET WATERS.

AND, UH, I MEAN, WE CAN ALWAYS USE WATER, UM, SHADE.

WE NEED OUR, OUR, OUR DUGOUT COVERS ARE, ARE THEY'RE ON THEIR LAST LEGS.

THAT WOULD BE GREAT.

UM, A LOT OF THE KIDS CAN'T THE HEAT IN, AND ESPECIALLY, YOU KNOW, IN THE LAST GAME OF THE SEASON, UH, WE HAVE, WE HAVE WATER GUNS, UH, THAT PEOPLE HAVE ON THE BASIS.

AND AS THE KIDS GO AROUND, AS SHE GET SHOT WITH WATER FENCE, IT'S, UH, IT'S VERY FUN.

IT'S VERY FUN.

YOU'LL HAVE TO COME.

THEN WE USUALLY HAVE A PICNIC TO THAT FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH BRINGS OUT AND THEY PROVIDE, UM, HOT DOGS AND EVERYTHING FOR THE KIDS AND THE FAMILIES.

AND WHOEVER'S THERE, THAT'S A FUN DAY.

EVERYBODY GETS A TROPHY.

A LOT OF THE KIDS HAVE NEVER HAD TROPHIES BEFORE.

AND THEN THERE ARE SOME KIDS THAT HAVE GOTTEN SO MANY TROPHIES FROM US THAT THEY'RE LIKE, WE ALREADY HAD THIS ONE BEFORE.

ALL RIGHT.

SO, SO, UH, MARGARET, YES, HEATHER.

UM, THE LAST TIME YOU VISITED THE BOARD, UH, YOU GUYS WERE HAVING DRAINAGE ISSUES ON YOUR FIELD WHERE THOSE HAVE THOSE BEEN TAKEN CARE OF.

YES, MA'AM PERFECT.

AND, UM, I DON'T KNOW IF THE LAST TIME I, I SAW YOU GUYS BUDDY LEAGUE IS NOW IN CANADA.

SO THERE'S NOW A BUDDY LEAGUE IN CANADA.

WELL, I KNOW WE CAN BUILD IMPROVEMENTS ON OUR BOND FILM IMPROVEMENTS PLANNED FOR THESE GUYS, LEAVE THIS GUY'S FIELD DANDY.

SO THE GOOD NEWS IS, IS, UM, YOU KNOW, GOSH, ALMOST, UH, OVER A YEAR AGO, WE MET WITH BETH, HEATHER AT, UH, ADDED HER HOME AS A MATTER OF FACT, AND, AND HEARD KIND OF WHAT THEIR NEEDS WERE.

AND I THINK THAT THE STAFF HAS, IS, UH, UH, READILY RESPONDED TO THOSE DAILY NEEDS.

BUT AT THE SAME TIME WE HEARD KIND OF THE BIG PICTURE NEEDS IN THE BOND PROGRAM.

THERE'S PROVISIONS FOR SHADE, UM, AND THEN MANY OF THE FIELDS.

AND SO THERE WILL BE SHADE IN THE 2022 BUDGET FOR THE BLEACHER SECTION, HOWEVER, OVER THE DUGOUTS IN THAT AREA.

UM, ONCE I HAD HEARD THAT IN THE PAST THAT THE BUDDY LEAGUE HAD COVERED THE COST OF THOSE FOR THEMSELVES, I FELT THAT THAT WAS, UM, SHALL WE SAY, OUT OF BOUNDS.

UM, AND SO, UH, THE PARKS DEPARTMENT GOING FORWARD AS COMMITTED TO MAKING SURE THAT THOSE ARE IN GOOD SHAPE, YOU KNOW, THAT THOSE FABRIC COVERS ARE TH THEY DO HAVE A SHORT LIFE SPAN.

IF YOU CAN GET A FEW YEARS OUT OF THEM IS WHAT IT IS.

THEY GET WIND WHIPPED AND THE NEW VISA.

AND SO ANYTIME THOSE GET KIND OF RAGGEDY AND UNTENABLE, THEN THEY JUST LET THE PARK OPS FOLKS

KNOW, AND WE'LL, WE'LL FIND A WAY TO MAKE SURE THAT GETS DONE.

THE NEXT GREAT THING THAT'S HAPPENING OUT AT BRADFIELD IS THAT THE RESTROOM AND CONCESSION IS BEING REPLACED, UM, BOTH TOGETHER.

AND WE'RE WORKING ON THAT PROJECT NOW.

AND SO, UH, WITH HER FEEDBACK, WORKING THROUGH SAM AND THE ATHLETIC SIDE, UM, THE CONCESSION AREA WILL BE SPLIT IN TWO THIRDS AND ONE THIRD.

SO THERE WILL BE THE BUDDY LEAGUE WILL HAVE KIND OF THEIR OWN SECTION THAT SUITS THEIR NEEDS FOR THE TYPE OF FOOD SERVICE THAT THEY'VE BEEN DOING IN THE PAST.

AND THEN THE OTHER SIDE WILL BE FOR THE OTHER BASEBALL FIELD ASSOCIATION OR ASSOCIATION ON THOSE OTHER FIELDS.

SO THAT WAY THEY'RE NOT COMPETING IN THE SAME SPACE.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT SECURITY.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT SHARING PLUGS AND ALL THAT KIND OF STUFF.

SO THEY WILL HAVE THEIR OWN SPACE.

ONCE THAT FACILITY IS BUILT, IT WILL BE BRAND NEW RESTROOMS WILL BE FANTASTIC, UH, BECAUSE THEY WILL ALSO HAVE, UM, A NOT JUST A MALE AND A FEMALE SIDE, THEY WILL HAVE A FAMILY, A COUPLE OF FAMILY, UM, RESTROOMS THAT WILL HAVE, UH, CHANGING STATIONS, NOT CHILD CHANGING STATIONS, ADULT CHANGING STATION.

SO YOU COULD HANDLE THE FULL GAMUT OF FOLKS THAT MIGHT NEED VERY SPECIFIC CARE THROUGHOUT THE TIME.

SO, UM, TH THOSE ARE THE NEEDS THAT WE HEARD AND THE BOND PROGRAM IS ABLE TO PROVIDE FOR IT WITH A FEW TWEAKS.

UM, WE'RE, WE'RE EXCITED TO BE A PARTNER WITH THEM AT ANY LEVEL.

SO, UM, WE'RE BASICALLY WORKING ON OUR PRODUCT PORTFOLIO RIGHT NOW AND WE AREN'T SURE, LIKE ONE OF THE THINGS WE WANT TO OFFER IS A BENCH IN A PARK.

SO IT DON'T LIKE A DONOR WOULD BE ABLE TO PURCHASE A BENCH, I GUESS, FROM US THAT WE WOULD PUT IN THE PARK.

BUT WE DON'T KNOW IF THERE ARE SPECIFIC STANDARDS THAT WE NEED TO ABIDE BY HOW, WHO IS GOING TO PUT THAT STUFF IN AND WHETHER OR NOT WE NEED APPROVAL FROM PARKS DEPARTMENT OR CITY COUNCIL, OR KIND OF WHERE, WHERE DO THESE PRODUCT CATALOG ITEMS FIT INTO PUTTING THEM INTO THE PARKS? I CAN ANSWER THAT WHEN YOU'RE READY.

SO, UM, IT'S AN EASY FIX.

UM, SOMETHING THAT WE CAN DO IS, AND WE'VE TALKED ABOUT, WE JUST HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO DO IT JUST YET, BUT WE WOULD HAVE A, UM, A GIFT AND DONATION CATALOG THAT'S AVAILABLE FOR ANYBODY IN THE PUBLIC THAT WANTS TO DONATE SOMETHING, UH, TO THE PARK SYSTEM.

AND THE BENEFIT TO THAT IS, IS THAT IT FITS WITHIN THE STANDARDS THAT WHETHER IT'S, UH, TRASH CANS, UH, DRINKING FOUNTAINS, PARK, BENCHES, UH, TREE VARIETIES, ANYTHING THAT WE WANT TO PUT IN THE PARK WOULD ALREADY AUTOMATICALLY BE IN THE CATALOG.

THAT'S ACCEPTABLE TO THE PARK SYSTEM, UM, AND REC RECREATION FOR THAT MATTER TO A LOT OF WHAT I'VE DONE IN THE PAST WITH A DONATION CATALOG IS IT WOULD INCLUDE, UM, RECREATION SUPPLIES.
