HI, EVERYONE. I'M PATTY MORAN WITH STREET TALK.

THE GARLAND STREET DEPARTMENT HAS AN INFRASTRUCTURE CONSTRUCTION PROGRAM IN PLACE THAT ALLOWS THEM TO IMPROVE YOUR STREETS.

ONE WAY IS BY PERFORMING STREET RECONSTRUCTION OR THE ACT OF REBUILDING EXISTING STREETS THAT HAVE REACHED THE END OF THEIR USEFUL LIFE.

A DECISION TO BEGIN RECONSTRUCTION IS MADE AFTER AN ASSESSMENT DETERMINES THE STREET IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR THIS PROCESS, TYPICALLY IT TAKES SEVERAL WEEKS TO BE COMPLETED.

SO HERE'S WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOUR STREET GETS RECONSTRUCTED AT LEAST TWO WEEKS BEFORE WORK BEGINS, STREET DEPARTMENT EMPLOYEES WILL HAND-DELIVER TO RESIDENTS HOMES A NOTIFICATION ABOUT THE UPCOMING WORK.

UTILITIES WILL THEN BE MARKED AND VERIFIED IN PREPARATION FOR CONSTRUCTION.

AND DURING THE CONSTRUCTION PROCESS, UTILITY COMPANIES WILL BE LOWERING LINES, WHICH MAY RESULT IN TEMPORARY INTERRUPTIONS IN SERVICE.

IF YOU HAVE AN INSTALLED SPRINKLER SYSTEM THAT IS LOCATED WITHIN THE CITY RIGHT AWAY, PLEASE LOCATE AND MARK ALL EXISTING SPRINKLER HEADS.

THIS WILL ENSURE THAT DAMAGE TO YOUR SPRINKLER SYSTEM IS KEPT TO A MINIMUM.

ONCE CONSTRUCTION BEGINS, YOU WILL NOT HAVE ACCESS TO THAT SEGMENT OF THE STREET UNTIL THE NEW PAYMENT IS OPEN TO TRAFFIC.

PLEASE MOVE YOUR VEHICLES TO A DIFFERENT LOCATION BECAUSE THE DAY CONSTRUCTION IS SCHEDULED TO BEGIN, ANY VEHICLES LEFT ON THE STREET WILL GET A VIOLATION TAG ASKING OWNERS TO REMOVE IT.

WE'LL DO EVERYTHING WE CAN TO IDENTIFY AND LOCATE THE OWNER BEFOREHAND.

BUT IF THEY CAN'T BE REACHED, UNFORTUNATELY AS A LAST RESORT, THEIR VEHICLES WILL HAVE TO BE TOWED SO WORK CAN BEGIN.

ON THE DAY WORK BEGINS, BARRICADES WILL BE PLACED, THE CONTRACTOR WILL START TO SAW THE STREET AND EROSION CONTROL BARRIERS WILL BE SET UP.

THE PAVEMENT IS THEN BROKEN AND REMOVAL BEGINS.

ONCE IT HAS BEEN REMOVED, THE SOIL UNDERNEATH THE PAVEMENT IS PREPARED AND READY TO BE LAYERED UP.

AFTER THAT, A CEMENT SLURRY IS MIXED INTO THE BASE MATERIAL TO STABILIZE IT.

DURING THIS TIME, IT'S EXTREMELY IMPORTANT THAT THE BASE REMAINS DRY TO FACILITATE CONSTRUCTION AND ALLOW EMERGENCY VEHICLE ACCESS.

FOR THIS REASON, WE ASK, IF POSSIBLE, YOU CAN AVOID EXCESSIVE WATERING OF YOUR LAWN OR ANY OTHER ACTIVITY THAT WOULD RESULT IN ADDING MOISTURE TO YOUR STREET.

AFTER THE BASE IS READY, REINFORCING STEEL BARS AND REDWOOD CONSTRUCTION JOINTS ARE ADDED, CONCRETE FOR THE STREET, DRIVEWAYS, AND SIDEWALKS IS THEN POURED AND FINISHED.

FINALLY, WATER VALVES AND FIRE HYDRANTS ARE CHECKED AND IF NEEDED, SPRINKLERS ARE REPAIRED.

THE SOIL IS THEN BACKFILLED AND SOD IS PLACED AND WATERED.

NOW YOU KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOUR ROAD IS BEING RECONSTRUCTED.
