UM, GARLAND WAS FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO RECEIVE, UH, $53 MILLION IN ARPA FUNDING.

SO, OF THAT, YEAH, GREAT.

OF THAT, WE, UH, RECEIVED 4.85 MILLION FOR IMPROVEMENTS AT WIN JOYCE PARK.

UM, SO WE'RE GONNA REALLY, UH, YOU KNOW, SHARPEN OUR PENCILS AND GET A REALLY GOOD DESIGN FOR ALL THE, THE NEIGHBORS.

AND, UH, I'M GONNA TELL YOU THE AMOUNT OF SURVEYS THAT WE HAVE RECEIVED ON THIS PROJECT.

IT'S GONNA BE, IT'S UNREAL.

IT'S, IT'S, IT'S LIKE FIVE TIMES MORE THAN WHAT WE HAD AT LU H SO IT'S, THE NUMBER IS KINDA STAGGERING.

SO IT'S REALLY GREAT INPUT THAT WE'VE RECEIVED ON THIS PROJECT.

WHY DO YOU THINK WE GOT SO MANY? YOU KNOW, WHEN WE DID THE FIRST PUBLIC MEETING, THERE WERE ABOUT 75 PEOPLE IN ATTENDANCE, AND THEN THE, THE SECOND PUBLIC MEETING WAS JUST ABOUT THE SAME.

I THINK IT WAS WORD OF MOUTH.

I MEAN, IT WAS FROM WHAT I LIKE THE SKATE PARK.

IT JUST, YEAH.

IT WAS JUST, I MEAN, WE HAD 840 SURVEY RESPONSES.

SO, SO THOSE NEIGHBORS HAVE BEEN LOOKING AT THAT PARK WITH YEAH.

ALMOST NOTHING IN IT.

AND A LOT OF 'EM ARE SAYING LIKE, WE'VE LIVED HERE FOR DECADES AND TRYING TO GET SOMETHING.

SO I THINK THEY WERE REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THAT.

SO, I KIND OF TALKED ABOUT THIS ALREADY, BUT, UH, YOU KNOW, RECEIVE $4.8 MILLION FOR THIS RENOVATION.

UM, WE'RE GONNA REALLY PROBABLY USE ALL, ALL BIT OF THAT.

SO, UM, A LOT OF TIMES, UH, DURING THAT PUBLIC, UH, MEETING, THEY WERE ALWAYS ASKING, SO THIS IS $4.8 MILLION AND THIS IS WHAT YOU'RE SHOWING US, BUT IT'S ALWAYS THE UNDERGROUND UTILITIES.

IT'S THE STUFF THAT YOU DON'T REALLY SEE THAT REALLY CHEWS AWAY AT YOUR BUDGET.

SO WE HAVE TO BE REALLY STRATEGIC ON WHAT WE DO ON SITE.

SO REALLY LISTENING AND TRYING TO FIGURE OUT THE BEST APPROACH FOR PLACEMENT,

BUT THAT, SO, UH, I'M SURE IF YOU KNOW, BUT LATE, UH, WIND JOYCE HAS A, A REALLY DIVERSE ECOSYSTEM, HAS WETLANDS, TEXAS BLACKLAND PRAIRIE, AND GREAT PLAINS FOREST.

UH, THERE'S A LOT OF NATURAL THEMES FOR THIS AREA.

THERE'S BIRDS, THERE'S WILDLIFE, UH, FROM WHAT I'M TOLD, THERE'S USED TO BE FISHING AND, UM, WHICH THERE STILL IS, BUT, UH, THE ACCESS WAS A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT.

SO, UM, LIKE I SAID EARLIER, THE WIND JOY PARK WOULD BE UTILIZED AS A CORRIDOR FOR EVENTUALLY A FUTURE TRAIL SHORELINE, UH, SORRY, A FU A FUTURE SHORELINE TRAIL, UH, ALONG LAKE RAY HUBBARD.

SO THEY WHOLE INTENDED THE CITY.

WE'RE TRYING TO GET A LOT OF TRAIL CONNECTIONS WHERE YOU CAN GO FROM ONE POINT, HIT A PARK, GO ALONG YOUR WAY.

IT'S REALLY JUST THAT CONNECTIVITY.

I'M NOT CERTAIN IF Y'ALL CAN SEE THIS ON YOUR SCREEN, BUT YEAH.

UM, WE CAN SEE IT ON YOURS.

UM, BUT, YOU KNOW, FORTUNATELY I SUPPOSE IT'S, IT'S KIND OF TO THE ONE SIDE OF THE SIDE, SO IT STILL HAS, UM, AND NOT THAT YOU'RE LIMITED, BUT THAT, YOU KNOW, JUST DEPTH WISE, YOU'RE KINDA LIMITED ON WHAT YOU ACTUALLY EXECUTE PLACE WITHIN THE AREA.

BUT FORTUNATELY, WE DO HAVE A REALLY LARGE OPEN AREA, WHICH IS JUST, UH, IT'S REALLY RIPE FOR THE PICKING.

AND THEN IT'S THE, THE, IT REALLY KIND OF EMPHASIZES THAT NATURE THEME.

UM, UH, GIVEN WE HAVE, UH, STRONG ACCESS VIEWS FROM THE NEIGHBORHOODS AND VIEWS TO THE LAKE, AND THAT WAS A REALLY BIG, UH, CONCERN FOR THE NEIGHBORS DURING THE, UH, SURVEY STAGE.

THEY WANNA MAKE SURE THEY HAVE LAKEFRONT ACCESS VIEWS.

UM, AND IF YOU GO OUT THERE NOW, IT'S TREE LINED, BUT IT'S OVERGROWN.

SO, UH, THE INTENT IS TO REALLY GET A GOOD SURVEY IN, STUDY THE TREE OF THE ECOSYSTEMS, UH, AND REALLY CLEAR OUT THAT UNDERBRUSH OPENING UP THOSE VIEWS.

AND THAT WAS A REALLY KEY, UH, PART THAT THE, UH, THE NEIGHBORS REALLY WANTED TO ENSURE THAT WE HAVE, LET'S SEE, WHAT'S A LAY DOWN YARD? A LAY DOWN YARD.

SO THERE USED TO BE AN OLD PARKING LOT HERE.

AND, UM, SOME OF THE, UH, OTHER DEPARTMENTS, UH, WASTEWATER DEPARTMENT WOULD ACTUALLY USE THAT AS A KINDA A STORAGE, UH, LOCATION.

SO, UH, THE AREA IN BROWN IS, USED TO BE DECADES AGO, IT WAS A PARKING LOT, AND IT WAS KIND OF JUST A LAYER PIPE AND MATERIALS DOWN.

SO THERE'S THE PARKING LOT FOR THE BOAT DOCK, THAT, THAT BIG SECTION WAS THE BOAT DOCK THERE, RIGHT? MANY, MANY YEARS AGO WHEN YOU COULD, YOU COULD BRING A BOAT UP THERE.

IF YOU GO OUT THERE NOW, YOU CAN STILL SEE A, LIKE, HITS LITTLE PIECES OF IT.

BUT, UM, SO THAT, THAT THE, THIS LOCATION OF THAT IS WHERE WE ACTUALLY KIND OF, UM, YOU'LL SEE IT FURTHER INTO THE CONCEPT PLAN THAT OUR CIRCULATION OCCURS WITHIN HERE AS FAR AS VEHICULAR ACCESS.

SO WE'RE TRYING TO REALLY, IF IN THE PAST THERE'S A PARKING LOT THERE, WE'RE TRYING TO PUT SOMETHING THERE AS WELL TO WHERE IT'S NOT, THE DISTURBANCE LEVEL IS VERY SIMILAR TO IT.

UM, THE CONDITION OF THAT EXISTING AREA, IT'S, UH, IT, SOMETIMES YOU CAN SEE REMNANTS OF THE EXISTING PARKING LOT, BUT, UH, A LOT OF TIMES IT'S, IT'S NOT REALLY COMPLIANT.

BUT, UM, WE DID TRY TO CONSIDER THAT.

BUT, UH, THE INTENT IS REALLY JUST TO REMOVE IT COMPLETELY.

UM, AND FORTUNATELY I THINK THERE'S A LOT OF, IT'S ALREADY BEEN REMOVED FOR THE MOST PART.

SO, YOU KNOW, I REALLY SHOULD HAVE BROUGHT MY GLASSES TODAY.

UM, SO THERE'S ALWAYS THAT REALLY GOOD POTENTIAL TO REALLY OPEN UP THOSE VIEWS.

UM, WE HAVE A LOT OF WILDLIFE, LIKE I TALKED ABOUT EARLIER, UH, WETLAND ALONG THE SHORELINE.

UM, WE ASKED THE PEOPLE, YOU KNOW, WHAT OFTEN, WHAT PARK DO YOU VISIT THE MOST? UH, IT WAS DUCK CREEK GREENBELT, UH, JOHN PAUL JONES PARK, WHICH WE'RE ALSO WORKING ON RIGHT NOW TOO.

SO, UM, BUT YOU KNOW, THERE'S A LOT OF GREAT FEEDBACK THAT WE RECEIVED.

BUT THERE WERE ALSO A LOT OF CONCERNS, UM, FROM THE, THE, THE NEIGHBORS.

SO PEOPLE PARK ON THE STREET, THEY'RE CONCERNABLE WITH THIS PROJECT, ARE WE GONNA BE PARKING IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD? SO WE KIND OF TOOK THAT INTO ACCOUNT AS WE DEVELOP A CONCEPT PLAN.

SO BY HEARING THAT, YOU KNOW, THAT REALLY HONES IN THAT WE NEED ON SITE PARKING VERSUS OFF STREET.

SO, AND IF I RECALL RIGHT, I DON'T REALLY KNOW THAT THERE'S A GOOD SHOULDER OUT ON EAST OATS, SO IT'S NOT REALLY SAFE TO DO THAT.

SO THAT'S ALL THE REASON TO HAVE IT ON SITE.

UH, THERE ARE OTHER CONCERNS WERE SECURITY, UM, LIGHT POLLUTION, FAST TRAFFIC THAT KIND OF COINCIDES WITH THE STREET PARKING AND REALLY JUST MAINTAINING, UH, IMPINGING THE, THE LAKEVIEW.

SO I REALLY WANNA, UH, THEY SAY, I'VE LIVED HERE FOR YEARS.

I BOUGHT THIS HOUSE, I WANNA SEE THE LAKE.

SO, UM, THAT'S, THAT'S KIND OF, IT KINDA LEADS UP TO OUR PROGRAMMING FOR THAT.

UM, SO WE ALSO, UM, ASKED PEOPLE, WHY, WHY DO YOU GO OUTDOORS? AND 39%, UH, SAID THAT WE GO OUTDOORS FOR WELLNESS, 34 FOR RELAXATION.

UM, SO THOSE WERE THE TOP TWO CATEGORIES THAT DURING THE SURVEY THAT WE FOUND THAT, UH, PEOPLE REALLY WANT TO DO.

SO, UH, THAT KIND OF COINCIDES WITH LIKE, NEIGHBORS WALKING TO THIS AREA, REALLY ENJOYING THE PARK.

SO IT BECOMES THAT KIND OF A, THAT FAMILY BASED NEIGHBORHOOD ATMOSPHERE FOR THAT.

SO ANOTHER PART OF THE SURVEY, UM, WE KIND, WE HAD HIGH COST PROGRAMS, UH, ELEMENTS FOR IMPROVEMENTS ON SITE.

WE HAD MID-RANGE, UH, ELEMENTS AND LOW COST, SO HIGH, MID, AND LOW.

SO OF THESE, UH, WE, WE ASKED THE PEOPLE BASICALLY IT'S LIKE, WHAT DO YOU WANT TO SEE OUT THERE? UM, IT'S YOUR LIKES AND DISLIKES.

SO THIS REALLY GIVES US, IT GAVE US A GOOD DIRECTION ON WHAT ARE THE TOP THREE.

SO WE HAD FIVE.

SO, UM, THAT'S, IT'S, IT'S A FEATURE THAT WOULD REALLY BE GREAT TO HAVE OUT HERE.

UM, I THINK IT COULD BE A LOT OF USE FOR THAT.

UM, THE MID-RANGE, UH, COST ELEMENT, THEY WANT ENHANCE PARKING LIGHTING.

SO THAT'S NOT THE INTENT.

I'VE KIND OF PUSHED IT TO FEBRUARY TIMEFRAME.

I THINK I'M GONNA KEEP IT THAT WAY.

SO I'M GONNA GIVE YOU KIND OF THE LAST TWO ARBOR DAYS.

UH, IT DIDN'T MAKE SENSE TO GIVE YOU A YEAR.

AGO'S ARBOR DAY AFTER WE'VE ALREADY HAD ONE.

AND THEN, SO THIS IS GONNA BE KIND OF A CATCH UP YEAR.

UM, SO WE DID ARBOR DAY ON NOVEMBER 5TH, 2022.

AND AGAIN, WE HAD ONE ON NOVEMBER 4TH, 2023 THAT COINCIDES WITH THE STATE ARBOR

DAY OF TEXAS.

THAT'S ONE OF THE REQUIREMENTS THAT WE NEED TO DO TO MEET OUR TREE CITY, OSA, WHICH WE ARE NOW ON OUR 16TH CONSECUTIVE YEAR, WHICH PUTS US IN, BELIEVE IT OR NOT, LIKE THE TOP 10 IN TEXAS IN TERMS OF LONGEST RUNNING TRU CITY OSA.

SO THAT'S PRETTY IMPRESSIVE AS I RECALL, NOVEMBER 4TH.

'CAUSE I WAS THINKING ABOUT THE FACT THAT THERE WAS GONNA BE ARBOR DAY.

YEAH, IT WAS PRETTY WET RIGHT AROUND THAT TIME.

IT WAS, IT WAS KIND OF RAINY.

ONE 11 RANCH HAS A TENDENCY TO BE.

WE WERE, WE WERE WATCHING IT CLOSELY.

WE WERE KEEPING OUR FINGERS CROSSED.

UM, SO TWO YEARS AGO WE WERE AT AUDUBON PARK.

AND IF YOU WERE OUT THERE AT THAT ONE, THAT WAS A VERY COLD AND RAINY DAY.

THERE WAS ACTUALLY ICE OUT THERE.

AND THEN THE UH, UH, THIS PAST YEAR WAS AT ONE 11 RANCH.

UM, AND AS DAVID MENTIONED, YEAH, WE WERE WATCHING THE RAIN PRETTY CLOSELY ON THAT ONE AS WELL.

UH, WE CONTINUED AGAIN TO PARTNER WITH GP AND L ON THEIR TREE POWER TREE GIVEAWAY.

AND WE GAVE AWAY 300 TREES AT EACH ONE OF THOSE EVENTS.

IT CONTINUES TO BE A REALLY POPULAR, UM, EVENT IN TOWN.

AND WE'LL CONTINUE TO DO THAT.

UH, THROUGH BOTH OF THOSE EVENTS, WE HAD OVER 250 VOLUNTEERS, WHICH AMOUNTED TO OVER A THOUSAND HOURS IN VOLUNTEER TIME.

SO A LOT OF GREAT, GREAT VOLUNTEERS CAME OUT TO HELP US PUT TREES IN THE GROUND.

UM, I'M GONNA HIGHLIGHT, UH, SOME ADDITIONAL SLIDES HERE ABOUT OUR, WE DID COMPLETED OUR FIRST URBAN TREE CANOPY STUDY FOR THE CITY OF GARLAND.

SO I'M GONNA GIVE YOU SOME HIGHLIGHTS ON THAT.

AND THEN WE ALSO COMPLETED THIS PAST SUMMER, A HUNDRED PERCENT INVENTORY OF ALL, UH, WHAT I WOULD CALL PLANTED TREES OR TREES THAT ARE IN OUR DEVELOPED PARKS.

NOT FORESTED AREAS, BUT IN OUR DEVELOPED PARKS.

SO THIS WAS TWO YEARS AGO, TWO AND A HALF YEARS, YEAH, TWO YEARS AGO FROM, UH, THE COLD DAY OUT ON THE BACKSIDE OF, OF AUDUBON RIGHT BEHIND, UH, THE BALL FIELDS THERE.

AND WE PLANTED 30 TREES BACK IN THAT AREA.

ALONG THAT WALKING TRAIL, WE ONLY LOST ONE, WHICH IS PRETTY AWESOME CONSIDERING HOW HOT IT WAS.

THE, THE SUMMER, THAT SUMMER, GREAT TURNOUT.

YOU CAN SEE ALL THOSE EAGER VOLUNTEERS THAT WERE OUT THERE.

THEY STRIPPED DOWN ON THOSE CLOTHES PRETTY QUICK ONCE THEY GOT TO PLANTING TREES.

UM, YOU SEE THE TREES AGAIN LINED UP THERE, UH, READY TO BE GIVEN AWAY.

UH, IT ACTUALLY WORKED OUT REALLY WELL AT ALL AT AT ONE 11.

SO IF YOU'VE BEEN TO ONE 11, YOU KNOW, IT'S A CIRCULAR DRIVE AND IT WAS, IT WORKED OUT REALLY WELL TO HAVE 'EM COME IN.

AND THEN WE HAD SPOTTERS AT THE BRIDGE.

'CAUSE THE BRIDGE IS ONLY, CAN ONLY HAVE ONE CAR ON THERE AT A TIME.

SO WE HAD CONTROLS THERE AND EVERYTHING, BUT IT WAS REALLY GOOD.

UM, TURNED OUT TO BE A REALLY GREAT EVENT.

AND YOU CAN SEE THERE AGAIN, PLANTING, PLANTING.

THERE'S OUR SHOVELS ALL LINED OUT AND THEY'RE IN THERE PLANTING TREES.

AND, UH, ONE 11 FLOODS A LOT MORE THAN IT EVER USED TO, WHICH HAS LED TO A LOT OF ROOT ROT DOWN THERE.

SO WE'VE LOST SOME REALLY, REALLY, REALLY BIG BEAUTIFUL TREES DOWN THERE.

AND SO, UH, WHAT WE'RE DOING IS HOPEFULLY PLANTING THAT NEXT GENERATION AND, AND HELPING SO THAT THAT PARK STAYS LOOKING THE WAY IT DOES FOR GENERATIONS TO COME.

EACH TREE, UH, CAME ON ITS OWN 18 WHEELER, UH, WAS HOISTED UP BY A CRANE, UH, AS YOU CAN SEE HERE, AND THEN, UM, PLANTED.

SO THAT WAS A PRETTY, THOSE ARE FUN DAYS WHEN YOU PLANT TREES WITH CRANES.

SO I'VE DONE 'EM WITH HELICOPTERS THAT'S WAY COOLER, BUT CRANES ARE COOL TOO.

ALL RIGHT, SO ANOTHER BIG THING THAT WE DID THIS YEAR WAS WE COMPLETED OUR FIRST URBAN TREE CANOPY STUDY.

AND SO WHAT THAT IS, WHAT AN URBAN TREE CANOPY STUDY IS, IS YOU TAKE AN AERIAL PHOTO AND YOU USE REMOTE SENSING TO DETERMINE WHICH TREE COVER WHICH GRASS, WHAT CEMENT.

AND YOU COME UP WITH A PERCENTAGE SO THAT YOU KNOW WHAT PERCENTAGE OF YOUR LAND AREA IS ACTUALLY COVERED BY TREES.

AND THAT HAS A LOT OF BENEFITS, RIGHT? BECAUSE TREES PROVIDE SHADE, WHICH HELP WITH THE URBAN HEAT ISLAND EFFECT.

IF IT COVERS IMPERVIOUS SURFACE, IT HELPS WITH STORM WATER, UM, HAS A LOT OF BENEFITS.

AND SO YOU WANNA MAXIMIZE THE AMOUNT OF, OF ESPECIALLY IMPERVIOUS SURFACE THAT YOU HAVE COVERED WITH TREE CANOPY COVER, UH, FOR THE MANY BENEFITS THAT IT PROVIDES.

AND, BUT THE FIRST THING I'M GONNA SHOW YOU IS OUR TREE INVENTORY.

AND SO WE MAPPED, UM, WE HAD AN INTERN THIS PAST SUMMER AND SHE INVENTORIED ALL OF OUR PARKS.

SO IN ALL OF JUST OUR PARKS, WE HAD ALMOST 5,000 TREES.

AGAIN, THAT DOESN'T COUNT ANY OF THE FORESTED AREAS.

SO THOSE ARE JUST KINDA ONE-OFF TREES HERE AND THERE.

UM, AND THEN THIS SUMMER WE'RE GONNA INVENTORY ALL OF THE MEDIANS AND RIGHT OF WAYS.

UM, WITH MEDIUM HOUSEHOLD INCOME IS A HIGH DEAL BELOW POVERTY, VULNERABLE POPULATIONS, WE COULD SET ALL OF THOSE DIFFERENT PARAMETERS TO HIGH OR LOW.

AND BASED ON THOSE DIFFERENT PARAMETERS, IT WOULD CHANGE THE COLOR ON THE MAP TO SHOW YOU WHERE YOUR SITE SUITABILITY IS.

SO IF WE KNOW WE WANT, WE WANNA PLANT IN VULNERABLE COMMUNITIES, UH, WITH LOW, UH, CURRENT

UM, AND THEY SHOULDN'T JUST, WE NEED TO PROTECT THAT INVESTMENT AND GROW THAT INVESTMENT AND MANAGE THAT INVESTMENT JUST LIKE WE WOULD ANY OTHER ASSET THAT WE HAVE THAT'S VALUED AT THAT AMOUNT.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CARBON SEQUESTRATION AND CARBON STORAGE? SO, CARBON SEQUESTRATION IS ACTIVELY STORING CARBON.

CARBON S STORAGE IS WHAT'S CURRENTLY STORED THERE.

SO YOUNGER TREES ARE GONNA BE MORE VALUABLE IN CARBON SEQUESTRATION 'CAUSE THEY'RE GROWING REALLY, REALLY FAST.

THEY'RE ADDING A BUNCH OF WOOD, THEY'RE EATING A BUNCH OF CARBON OUT OF THE AIR, RIGHT? ONCE A TREE GETS REALLY, REALLY BIG, IT'S NOT GROWING AS MUCH, BUT IT HAS ALL OF THAT CARBON, CARBON STORED UP IN THE TRUNK, RIGHT? AND IN THE TREES AND IN THE BRANCHES AND IN THE LEAVES.

AND HOW THEY CALCULATE THAT IS IF YOU WERE TO CUT THAT TREE DOWN AND THEN YOU WERE TO RELEASE ALL OF THAT STORED CARBON BACK INTO THE ATMOSPHERE, WHAT WOULD IT COST TO BE ABLE TO SEQUESTER IT BACK OUT? AND THAT'S WHAT THAT VALUE IS.

UM, AGAIN, UH, SHOWING WHAT THEN WHAT WE DID IS WE LOOKED AT A COUPLE OF DIFFERENT SCENARIOS.

WHAT WE WANTED TO SAY WAS, OKAY, WHAT DOES THE FUTURE LOOK LIKE? AND WE, WE MET WITH, UM, OUR PLANNING DEPARTMENT AND WE LOOKED AT, YOU KNOW, HOW MANY ACRES ARE WE DEVELOPING ANNUALLY WITHIN THE CITY? AND WE, WE DEVELOPED ROUGHLY 45 ACRES A YEAR CURRENTLY, UM, IN THE CITY.

AND A LOT OF THAT IS REDEVELOPMENT.

SOME OF THAT'S IN THE LITTLE BIT OF LAND THAT WE HAVE LEFT FOR NEW DEVELOPMENT.

SO WE KIND OF RAN A COUPLE OF DIFFERENT SCENARIOS AND SAID, YOU KNOW, IF WE DO MODERATE DEVELOPMENT

SAYING WE STILL ARE IN THAT 45 ACRE RANGE, IF WE, WE GO HEAVY DEVELOPMENT, WHERE NOW WE'RE UP TO 80 ACRES.

UM, AND WE WANTED TO KEEP OUR CANOPY THE SAME OR IF WE WANTED TO GROW OUR CANOPY.

NOW AGAIN, THIS IS WORST CASE SCENARIO THAT'S WE'RE SAYING WE'RE LOSING 45 ACRES OF TREES.

THAT'S PROBABLY NOT GONNA BE THE CASE IF WE DEVELOP 45 ACRES OF TREES.

IT MIGHT BE, YOU MIGHT BE LOSING 20 50% OF THAT IN ACTUAL TREE CANOPY COVER.

BUT I ALWAYS LIKE TO ERR ON THE HIGH SIDE OF NUMBERS.

SO WHAT WE SHOW THEN IS WE WANTED TO, TO PLAN OUT TO 2050 TO SAY, OKAY, WHAT, WHAT, WHAT WOULD, HOW MANY TREES WOULD WE NEED TO PLANT ANNUALLY TO, TO MAINTAIN OUR TREE CANOPY COVER? AND THEN IF WE HAD GOT MORE AGGRESSIVE WITH DEVELOPMENT AND WE LOST MORE TREES, HOW MANY TREES WOULD WE NEED TO PLANT? SO WE WOULD NEED TO PLAN ON AVERAGE 401 TREES, UH, ANNUALLY.

IF WE WERE GOING TO MAINTAIN OUR CANOPY AT MODERATE DEVELOPMENT IN ALMOST 2000 TREES, UM, AT A HEAVY DEVELOPMENT.

AND IF WE WANTED TO GROW OUR CANOPY FIVE, 5%, UH, WE'D HAVE TO PLANT NEARLY 3,300 TREES A YEAR OR 5,000 TREES TO AT A HIGHER DEVELOPMENT.

NOW, THAT'S NOT US AS THE CITY WOULD HAVE TO PLANT THAT MANY TREES.

THAT'S A COMBINATION OF ALL TREES THAT ARE BEING PLANTED.

SO IF IT'S A NEW DEVELOPMENT, IT'S THE NEW TREES THAT ARE BEING PLANTED AS PART OF THAT NEW DEVELOPMENT.

IT'S HOMEOWNERS THAT ARE PLANTING TREES EVERY DAY IN THEIR BACKYARD THAT THOSE NUMBERS ACCOUNT FOR, FOR ALL OF THOSE, THOSE TYPES OF PLANTINGS, OBVIOUSLY THE CITY WOULD HAVE ITS PART.

UM, BUT THAT WOULD NOT MEAN THAT WE WOULD NEED TO DO ALL OF THAT.

SO IT JUST KIND OF, AGAIN, STRESSES TO THE IMPORTANCE OF ONE YOU HAVE TO PLANT A LOT WHEN YOU LOSE A BUNCH OF BIG, LARGE TREES.

YOU HAVE TO PLANT A LOT OF SMALL ONES TO BE ABLE TO CATCH UP.

AND, AND ALSO THIS WILL BE, YOU KNOW, A MESSAGE TO CITY COUNCIL IS THESE TREES HAVE VALUE AND WE DON'T WANNA WAIVE MITIGATION, UH, FOR DEVELOPMENTS BECAUSE WE CAN THEN USE THAT MITIGATION MONEY TO PLANT MORE TREES.

'CAUSE WE GOTTA PLANT MORE TREES TO KEEP UP WITH THE STUFF THAT WE'RE LOSING.

BUT MOST, MOST OF THAT COMES OUT OF OUR OPERATING DOLLARS.

UM, PART OF THAT INCLUDED $105 BILLION FOR URBAN AND COMMUNITY FORESTRY.

IT'S THE LARGEST AMOUNT OF FUNDING, UH, TO EVER BE DEDICATED TO URBAN AND COMMUNITY FORESTRY DE DEDICATED SPECIFICALLY FOR TREE PLANTING AND RELATED ACTIVITIES FOR THE PRIORITY IN UNDERSERVED POPULATION, TO MAKE THEM MORE CLIMATE RESILIENT.

THAT MEANS THAT REDUCE, UH, THE URBAN HEAT ISLAND EFFECT IN UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES TO MAKE THEM GREENER.

IT'S, UM, THEIR STUDY AND STUDY AFTER STUDY THAT THAT UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES HAVE TENDENCIES TO HAVE, UM, BE LESS TREE COVERED THAN MORE AFFLUENT COMMUNITIES.

UM, WHICH LEADS TO WORSE AIR QUALITY, WHICH LEADS TO LOTS OF OTHER ISSUES THAT CAN GO IN THERE.

THIS FUNDING WAS ANNOUNCED, UH, APRIL 12TH, 2023.

UM, AND OF COURSE I APPLIED, UH, AGAIN, THIS IS BEING FUNDED THROUGH THE URBAN AND COMMUNITY FORESTRY OF THE US FOREST SERVICE TO MAKE CITIES MORE RESILIENT, TO PROVIDE MORE COOLING EFFECTS AND INCREASED URBAN TREE CANOPY TO, UM, IMPROVE FOREST HEALTH WITHIN, UH, UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES AND TO AT OBTAIN BROADER EXPOSURE AND ACCESS TO ENVIRONMENTAL CAREER AND PATHWAYS.

WE DON'T HAVE A JOBS PROGRAM, BUT THIS WAS ALSO, THERE WAS FUNDING AVAILABLE FOR COMMUNITIES THAT HAD JOB PROGRAMS. SO THERE WERE, UM, UH, WE APPLIED FOR 1.1 MILLION TO IMPLEMENT THIS PROGRAM, UM, AND CAN SAY THAT IT WAS A TOTAL FIVE YEAR PROJECT COST OF TWO AND A HALF MILLION.

UH, 'CAUSE THIS WOULD BECOME THROUGH A MATCH APPLIED FOR A US FOREST GRANT IN THE AMOUNT OF 1.25 TO FUND A URBAN FORESTRY POSITION TO PAY, TO HELP PAY FOR TREES TO GO INTO THESE, TO GO INTO COMMUNITIES AND REMOVE DEAD TREES AND UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES WHERE POPULATIONS MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO AFFORD THE REMOVAL COSTS FOR TREES TO REMOVE THOSE TREES AND TO PLANT NEW TREES.

UM, AND WE WERE LUCKY ENOUGH, THERE WERE ONLY, UM, SEVEN GRANTS AWARDED IN THE ENTIRE STATE OF TEXAS.

AND WE WERE ONE OF 'EM.

SO THERE WERE TWO LARGE NONPROFITS THAT WERE AWARDED LARGE SUMS OF MONEY.

UM, AND THEN THERE WAS FOUR MUNICIPALITIES, FIVE MUNICIPALITIES THAT RECEIVED FUNDING.

UM, AND WE WERE ONE OF 'EM, AND WE WERE THE LARGEST.

THE NEXT HIGHEST AMOUNT THAT A MUNICIPALITY

PUERTO RICO, UM, HAWAII, THE PACIFIC ISLANDS, AND EVEN ALASKA, US VIRGIN ISLANDS.

UM, ALL RECEIVED MONEY IN VARYING AMOUNTS, UH, AND VARYING PROJECTS.

YOU WOULD THINK A BILLION DOLLARS WOULD GO A LONG WAYS.

BUT THERE'S A HUGE NEED, UM, THAT'S OUT THERE.

SO THE FACT THAT WE AS A, A MEAN, THE LARGEST IN, IN TEXAS AS A MUNICIPALITY GOT THE LARGEST, UH, GRANT IS I THINK A A BIG HUGE WIN.

HUGE WIN.

SO HOW THIS GRANT IS GONNA LAY OUT IS IT'S A FIVE YEAR MATCHING GRANT.

UM, WE CAN MATCH IT THROUGH CASH AND IN KIND SERVICES.

SO WE'RE GONNA MATCH, UM, HALF OF IT THROUGH IN KIND SERVICES.

THAT'S STAFF TIME, EQUIPMENT TIME, SOFTWARE, SUPPLIES, MATERIALS.

WE'RE ALREADY DOING A LOT OF THIS WORK.

I JUST GET TO USE, YOU KNOW, ANY, ANY, ANY OF OUR STAFF TIME, MY TIME EQUIPMENT, ALL OF THAT GETS TO USE FOR IT.

AND THEN OUT OF THIS WE'LL HAVE A VERY, VERY ROBUST TREE PLANTING PROGRAM.

SO WE WILL HAVE A TREE PLANTING MACHINE AT THE END OF THE FIVE YEARS AND A PLAN TO GO AHEAD AND, AND UTILIZE THOSE MITIGATION FUNDS MOVING FORWARD.

UM, WE'LL DO THIS UTILIZING CONTRACTORS USE, UTILIZING CITY STAFF VOLUNTEERS.

UH, THERE'LL BE SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES.

WE'RE GONNA HAVE A WHOLE P WE'RE GONNA HAVE A WHOLE WHOLE MARKETING AND AND PROMOTION AROUND THIS.
