UM, SHE'S BEEN WITH THE CITY NOW FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS, UM, AND HAS STARTED TO IMPLEMENT SOME CHANGES THAT I THINK WILL HELP THE DEFICIENCY AND FLOW, UH, OF THE, THE BOARDS AND CONDITIONS PROCESS.

SO ONE THING YOU WILL NOTICE THAT IS IN FRONT OF YOU IS THIS LOVELY BINDER.

AND YOU CAN SEE THEY'VE BEEN DOING METAL WORK THERE.

THEY HAD TO DO A LOT OF WELDING TO ATTACH ALL THAT TO THE, UH, TO THE SIDE OF THE BUILDING.

SO THEY'VE BEEN WORKING ON THAT.

THESE TWO PICTURES ARE DOWN IN THE ADMIN OFFICE AND IT SHOWS YOU THE NEW STOREFRONT, THE METAL FRAMING AND THE GLASS FOR THE STOREFRONT FOR OFFICES.

YOU CAN SEE IT'S STILL PRETTY ROUGH DOWN THERE.

SO, UH, I THINK WE'RE PROBABLY GONNA BE IN THE SECOND QUARTER INSTEAD OF THE FIRST QUARTER.

SUBSTANTIAL COMPLETION FOR MOST OF THE, OR ALL THE CONSTRUCTION SHOULD BE DONE IN THE FIRST QUARTER, UM, 2025.

BUT THEN THERE'S A PERIOD OF TIME OF MOVING IN, FINISHING OUT, MOVING IN ALL THE FURNITURE AND THE EQUIPMENT TESTING, UH, THAT I DO THINK WILL PUSH US INTO THE SECOND QUARTER OF 2025.

WE'VE BEEN MEETING, WE'VE HAD A MEETING ABOUT THE FURNITURE INSTALLATION AND THAT DOES A VERY, KIND OF LIKE A, I GUESS AN ARMY'S LOGISTICS.

YOU KNOW, GETTING EVERYTHING TO SHOW UP AT THE RIGHT TIMES.

AND, UH, SO WE'RE HOPING THAT, UH, IT ALL COMES TOGETHER LIKE TIME.

SO THE GRAND OPENING TO BE HANDLED.

'CAUSE I WOULD HATE TO PULL THEM AWAY FROM ESPECIALLY BEING SO CLOSE TO CENTRAL.

UM, SO WE DID THE FOURTH SATURDAY OF THE MONTH STARTING IN MAY, UH, STARTING IN MARCH.

AND WE WENT THROUGH JULY.

AND, UM, WE CONSECUTIVELY, IT STARTED OUT REALLY SLOW.

I THINK WE HAD MAYBE FIVE TO 10.

AND THEN THE NEXT ONE WE HAD, WE WERE RAINED OUT.

UM, WE WERE STILL THERE, BUT IF NOBODY, NOBODY CAME, THAT WAS YOUR, THAT WAS YOUR FIRST ONE .

I WAS LIKE, I PROMISE PEOPLE SHOW UP JULIE.

UM, BUT THEN WE, THE NEXT, THE NEXT FEW WE, WE GOT, WE, WE CONSISTENTLY HAD BETWEEN, UM, AROUND 12 KIDS AND 10 ADULTS.

THERE'S ONE AT THE, UH, UM, AT THE BELMONT APARTMENTS AT DUCK CREEK.

UM, IT'S BASICALLY JUST, IT'S A RESOURCE CENTER IN THEIR APARTMENT COMPLEX WHERE THE RESIDENTS CAN GO AND GET RESOURCES.

THEY HAVE LOTS OF FLYERS, PAMPHLETS, BROCHURES FOR, UM, EDUCATION RESOURCES IN GARLAND, UM, MEDICAL RESOURCES, FINANCE, UM, CAREER RESOURCES AND THINGS LIKE THAT.

SO THEY INVITED US FIRST, THEY FIRST INVITED US TO THEIR GRAND REOPENING.

THEY REDID THEIR, THEIR OFFICE THERE.

AND WE WENT.

AND, UM, IT'S VERY CLOSE TO SOUTH GARLAND, BUT IT'S STILL A LOT OF, WE HAD SOME PEOPLE THAT DIDN'T HAVE LIBRARY CARDS, DIDN'T REALIZE THE LIBRARY WAS RIGHT DOWN THE STREET.

UM, IN FACT, I SIGNED A LADY, A, A A MOM UP FOR A LIBRARY CARD.

AND WHEN SHE BROUGHT HER DAUGHTER THE VERY NEXT SATURDAY, SO IT WAS, AND SHE, WE RECOGNIZED EACH OTHER.

I JUST HAPPENED TO BE THERE.

UM, BUT THEN WE, WE WERE INVITED BACK.

UH, WE DID A COLLEGE FAIR AND THEY, THEY HAVE TROUBLE GETTING SOME OF THE RESIDENTS TO COME TO THINGS, BUT I'M ALWAYS HAPPY TO LEAVE, UM, THE, OUR BROCHURES IN OUR, IN OUR INFORMATION ABOUT OUR SERVICES.

AND THEN WE, JULIE AND I WENT AND WE MADE FRIENDSHIP BREAKUPS WITH THEM ALL SUMMER LONG.

UM, WE BROUGHT THEIR, OUR SUMMER, SUMMER ADVENTURE, UM, LOGS, BOOKMARKS, UH, FOR THE KIDS TO TAKE HOME.

AND THEY HAVE A SUMMER CAMP WHERE THE KIDS HAVE, THEY CAN EVEN SIGN UP AND COME.

UM, IT'S AN INTERESTING PLACE BECAUSE THE PARENTS HAVE TO BE HOME, BUT THEY'RE, THEY'RE NOT ABLE TO LEAVE, BUT THEY, UM, BUT IT'S A GOOD, IT'S A GOOD THING FOR THE KIDS TO GET OUT OF THE HOUSE IF THEY CAN'T, IF THEY DON'T HAVE THE TRANSPORTATION.

SO WE DID FRIENDSHIP BREAKS.

AND THEN WE DID A, A LITTLE, A CAREER FAIR.

UM, THEN WE, WE ALSO PARTNERED WITH, UM, LIGHT OF HOPE IMMIGRATION LAW CENTER, UH, TO PROVIDE CITIZENSHIP CLASSES AT THE SOUTH GROVE LIBRARY.

UH, THESE ARE, THEY WERE FREE CLASSES FOR, UH, THE, THE, THE STUDENTS TO SIGN UP FOR MATERIALS WERE PROVIDED.

UM, ANNA, THE INSTRUCTOR IN THAT, UM, KIND OF THE MIDDLE PICTURE, UM, THEY'RE THE, THEY'RE TRAINED BY LIGHT OF HOPE.

THEY'RE THERE ON A VOLUNTEER BASIS.

THEY BROUGHT IN A COUPLE OF, UH, HISTORY TEACHERS TO DO SOME OF THE EDUCATION ON THE TESTS.

AND THEY DID MOCK.

WE DID MOCK INTERVIEWS WITH THE, WITH THE STUDENTS.

AND WE HAD, UH, SEVEN STUDENTS FOR THAT WAS, THOSE ARE A REALLY GOOD, LIKE, IT WAS A REALLY GOOD LEARNING EXPERIENCE FOR US.

AND IT WAS ALSO, IT WAS JUST REALLY, IT WAS GREAT TO SEE THEM COME CONSISTENTLY EVERY WEEK.

AND, UH, I RAN INTO ONE OF THE STUDENTS LAST, ACTUALLY LAST WEEK, AND SHE FOUND, I'M STILL WAITING.

UH, THEY'RE GONNA NEED A LIBRARY CARD TO ACCESS THOSE DIGITAL SERVICES SO THAT THERE WOULD BE A PRIORITY FOR THEIR THAT TOO.

AGAIN, I DON'T THINK IT'S THE TOP, THE NUMBER ONE OR NUMBER TWO 'CAUSE WE REALLY HAVE TO MAKE INROADS AND MAKE RELATIONSHIPS WITH PEOPLE.

SO WE DO, THEY ARE, THEY DO USE THAT NOW CAN DO WE KNOW HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE, HOW MANY OF THOSE 302 PEOPLE ARE USING THEIR LIBRARY CARD? UM, NO NECESSARILY, BUT, AND I THINK THAT'S SOMETHING FOR US TO FIGURE OUT IN THE FUTURE OF BEING ABLE TO, HOW WE TRACK DEFINE SUCCESS, HOW DO WE DEFINE THIS WAS A LEARNING MOMENT, WHAT TO WE LEARN FROM IT AND THEN BE ABLE TO MOVE FORWARD WITH.

AND WHEN YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT THIS SECTION WHERE IT SAYS EVALUATION OF FEEDBACK, ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT THE COMMUNITY BEING ABLE TO PROVIDE FEEDBACK OR ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT INTERNAL WITH EVALUATION PROCESS? ALL OF IT.

WE CALLED IT SUMMER ADVENTURE AT YOUR LIBRARY.

AND THE, THE FORMAT, IT WAS OPEN TO CHILDREN FROM BIRTH THROUGH AGE 17.

WE DIDN'T INCLUDE ADULTS THIS YEAR.

UM, IT WASN'T FOCUSED SOLELY ON READING.

AND I'LL GO INTO THAT A LITTLE BIT MORE.

UH, WHY WE DIDN'T DO THAT, NO REGISTRATION, UH, THE EASE AND FLEXIBILITY OF DOING THE PROGRAM WERE THE KEY THINGS THAT WE WERE LOOKING FOR.

AND THERE WERE SIMPLE ACTIVITY BOOKMARKS THAT KIDS GOT.

THEY PICKED THEM UP, UH, WHEN WE FILLED IT OUT AS TO WHAT ACTIVITIES THEY DID, WHICH ONE OF THE ACTIVITIES WAS READING.

IT'S JUST THAT THAT'S NOT THE ONLY THING THAT THEY DID.

AND COME BACK THE NEXT WEEK, THEY WOULD TURN IT IN AND THEY GOT, YOU KNOW, SMALL PRIZES FOR EACH WEEK.

THIS LAST PART I THINK WAS ONE OF THE BIG REASONS WHY WE HAD THE NUMBERS THAT WE HAD.

PARTICIPANTS COULD START AT ANY TIME.

THEY DIDN'T HAVE TO START FROM THE VERY FIRST WEEK AND GO STRAIGHT THROUGH.

UM, OVER THE YEARS, THAT WAS ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE WERE ALWAYS LOOKING AT IS HOW CAN WE BATTLE THAT MIDSUMMER DROP? BECAUSE SOMETI, AT SOME POINT DURING THE SUMMER, MOST FAMILIES WOULD LEAVE AND GO ON VACATION AND WE'D NEVER GOT 'EM BACK.

AND WITH THIS, BECAUSE IT, IT WAS HAD THE FLEXIBILITY OF I CAN START THIS WAY, I CAN SKIP A WEEK AND I'M NOT BEHIND BECAUSE IT DOESN'T FLOW.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO THE WHOLE THING STRAIGHT THROUGH EACH WEEK STOOD ON ITS OWN.

AND I THINK THAT IS WHAT HELPED KEEP OUR NUMBERS HIGH.

AND AS FAR AS THE PROGRAM NOT FOCUSING SOLELY ON READING, ONE OF THE, UH, UH, THINGS THAT WE LOOKED AT WHEN WE WERE TRYING TO CREATE THIS WAS WHAT'S GOING ON IN ALL THE OTHER LIBRARY SYSTEMS. AND THEY ARE READING PROGRAMS, BUT THEY ALSO HAVE READING PROGRAMS WITH SCHOOL.

THE SCHOOLS ARE REALLY EMPHASIZING READING THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER.

YOU, I THINK KAREN EVEN REACHING OUT TO SOME OF HER FRIENDS AND OTHER, UH, LIBRARY SYSTEMS IN OTHER STATES, SAME SORT OF THING THAT THOSE TYPES OF PROGRAMS JUST ARE, WERE NOT AS POPULAR AS THEY ONCE WERE BECAUSE THERE'S JUST SO MANY OF THEM.

AND BY HAVING THIS WHERE READING IS A PART OF IT, BUT NOT EXCLUSIVELY READING IT GAVE THEM MORE THINGS TO DO.

UM, IN THE PAST WE, WE DID HAVE SOME THAT HAVE HAD ACTIVITIES, BUT READING WAS PRESCRIBED.

IT WAS THIS MANY MINUTES OF READING AND AN ACTIVITY.

BUT THIS ANOTHER PART I LIKED ABOUT THIS, SORRY, UH, IS THAT GOAL SETTING WAS A PART OF THIS.

AND WE HAD INFORMATION AND INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO SET GOALS.

AND SO WE TOLD THEM, THIS IS HOW YOU CAN SET A GOAL, WHAT, WHAT THOSE GOALS COULD BE.

SO THE KIDS HAD A LOT MORE CONTROL OVER THEIR SUMMER ACTIVITIES.

THEY COULD SEE, UM, COME TO LIBRARY PROGRAMS. THEY COULD READ, UM, THEY COULD VISIT THE LIBRARY.

THEY COULD ATTEND THE LIBRARY PROGRAM OR THEY COULD READ AND THEY SAT LIKE, OH, I ONLY FEEL LIKE READING 30 MINUTES THIS WEEK, BUT THERE'S THESE PROGRAMS I WANNA GO TO.

UH, SO THEY COULD FILL OUT THE INFORMATION HOW THEY WANT IT.

THEY SET THAT GOAL THEMSELVES AND THAT WAS, THEY RECEIVED THESE, UH, BOOKMARKS EACH WEEK FRONT WHAT WAS ON THE LEFT AND THE BACK, UH, ON THE RIGHT.

AND THEY, THEY COLORED IN ALL OF THE, THE THINGS, UM, LITTLE EMBLEMS, WHICH PLAYED INTO ANOTHER PART OF, UH, THE COMMENTS THAT I'LL SPEAK TO A LITTLE BIT LATER.

AGAIN, I HAD SHOWED THIS PICTURE IN MAY.

WE HAD, UH, THEY WERE INEXPENSIVE PRIZES, BUT THE KIDS LOVED THEM.

THE RUBBER DUCKS, ALL AGES.

EVERYBODY LOVES THE RUBBER DUCKS.

UH, OF COURSE WITH THE, THE, UM, FRIENDSHIP BRACELETS, BRACELETS PLAYED INTO THE RED CONCERT.

THOSE WERE POPULAR AND THE STAFF HAD 'EM ALSO SO THEY COULD TRADE WITH THIS.

UM, MANY TIMES IN THE PAST WHEN WE HAD DIFFERENT PRIZES, IT WAS, UH, INTERESTING TO SEE THAT SOME OF THE, THE OLDER KIDS, THEY WANTED THE RUBBER DUCKS, BUT WE GOT THE RUBBER DUCKS 'CAUSE WE BASED IT ON HOW MANY PARTICIPATE PARTICIPANTS WE WOULD HAVE AT CERTAIN AGE GROUPS.

SO IF WE HAD THE RUBBER DUCKS FOR THE, THE VERY YOUNGEST THAT COULDN'T HAVE SMALL CHARMS OR SOMETHING, THEY FELT THAT WE SAID, NO, THESE ARE FOR YOUR AGE GROUP.

AND THEY WOULD NOT, THEY WANTED THE RUBBER DUCKS AND THIS TIME THEY COULD CHOOSE WHATEVER.

THEY COULD HAVE THE RUBBER DUCT, THEY COULD HAVE THE SHOE CHARMS, UM, AND THEY COULD MAKE THE BRACELETS.

AND THEY REALLY ENJOYED ALL THREE OF THESE.

WE GOT GOOD FEEDBACK ON ALL OF THESE.

I JUST WANNA INTERJECT AT THIS POINT, UM, WHICH KATHLEEN HASN'T SAID YET.

UM, AND SHE, I'M NOT TRYING TO STILL , BUT WE'VE BEEN ANALYZING THE, THE SUMMER PROGRAM OVER A, A GOOD NUMBER OF YEARS TO LOOK TO SEE WHAT THE, HOW MANY PARTICIPANTS WERE BEEN GETTING, UM, AND THE COST.

SO THE, THE FINANCIAL COST AND THE STAFF COST OF THE COME AND EFFORT OF, WE SIT IN REALLY KATHLEEN, HER TEAM REDOING THAT THIS YEAR, UH, TO MAKE IT EASIER, NOT JUST FOR KIDS AND FAMILIES, BUT EASIER FOR SET UP BECAUSE IT'S, IT'S QUITE LABOR INTENSIVE.

THE BIG THING, UH, WITH THIS IS WE LOOKED AT HOW MUCH, UM, WE WERE SPENDING IN PRIZES EVERY SUMMER, WHAT THAT RETURN ON INVESTMENT WAS, AND DECIDED TO GO IN A DIFFERENT DIRECTION THIS YEAR WITH SOMETHING UNIVERSAL.

I MEAN, , I'VE GOT SOME CHEAP THIS, BUT I'VE GOT SOME.

SO IT, IT WAS A MUCH MORE COST EFFECTIVE ACROSS THE BOARD PROGRAM THIS YEAR.

BUT YOU'RE GONNA GET FEEDBACK AND RIGHT.

AND ALSO WITH THE, UH, SPEAKING TO WHAT YOU WERE SAYING IT, THE, UH, PERFORMERS, WE DID HAVE SOME PERFORMERS, BUT WE'VE FOUND THAT WITH, WITH ALL THE CITIES IN THIS, THIS AREA, ALL THE LIBRARIES THAT ARE IN THIS AREA, THE SAME.

THERE'S ONLY A LIMITED NUMBER OF SUMMER PERFORMERS AND THEY ARE EVERYWHERE.

SO PARENTS CAN PICK AND CHOOSE WHERE THEY GO, AND SOMETIMES THEY'LL KEEP GOING.

THEY LIKE TO SEE THIS ONE PERFORMER EVERYWHERE, BUT OTHER TIMES, OKAY, I'VE ALREADY SEEN THIS ONE, SO I'M NOT GONNA GO HERE.

AND WE TOOK IT WHERE THERE WAS A LOT MORE STAFF PROGRAMMING, STEAM, STEAM, PROGRAMMINGS, MAKERSPACE, UH, A LOT MORE UNIQUE PROGRAMMING THAT THEY COULDN'T GET AT NECESSARILY AT ANOTHER LOCATION.

AND THE FEEDBACK THAT, AS I'VE MENTIONED, AND KAREN MENTIONED, THE EASE OF PARTICIPATION, NOT JUST FOR THE, THE PARENTS AND THE KIDS.

THE KIDS THOUGHT IT WAS EASIER TOO, BUT STAFF, BECAUSE IF YOU THINK ABOUT THE NUMBER OF STAFF AND THE ROTATION ON DESK TRYING TO KEEP UP WITH, AND THE, THE BINDERS, WE'D HAVE BINDERS WITH RULES IN IT, AND YOU'D HAVE TO, AND YOU'D HAVE TO ENTER IT, AND WE'D HAD PROBLEMS. YOU'D BE ENTERING IT AND IT WOULD GO, UM, BECAUSE WE SAVED

AND I LIKED THIS, THIS ONE, UH, THEY ENJOYED GETTING PRAISE FOR THEIR, THEIR, UH, COLORING SKILLS.

BEFORE IT WAS, IT WAS JUST A CHECKING THE BOX.

I, I DID THIS MANY HOURS.

AND SO THIS ALLOWED A LITTLE CREATIVITY, A LITTLE PERSONALITY, AND THEN THE FRIENDSHIP.

WE WEREN'T EVEN PLANNING THAT.

, THIS REALLY EXCITED US WHEN WE SAW THIS, UH, THE BOOK MAR, I MEAN THE, THE SUMMER VENTURE PROGRAM, WE HAD 1,564 BOOKMARKS RETURNED.

SO KAREN AND I, WE WERE LOOKING BACK AT THE NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS AND THE COMPLETIONS.

NOW, EACH ONE OF THOSE WITH THE COMPLETION, UM, WAS THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE THAT STARTED AND WENT ALL THE WAY THROUGH.

AND YOU, IT SPEAKS FOR ITSELF.

YOU CAN SEE REGISTRATION STARTS OUT, THEY'RE EXCITED.

THEY COME IN, THEY GET THAT FIRST PRIZE.

THEY ARE LIKE, WELL, WE HAD A LOT OF A LITTLE LIKE A BAG AND SOME PENCILS AND STUFF THAT THEY GOT TO START WITH.

THEY WOULD STAY WITH IT FOR A WEEK OR TWO, AND THEN INEVITABLY IT WOULD DROP AND YOU COULD SEE IT ABOUT THE SAME PLACE.

IT'S USUALLY JULY 4TH, I THINK.

UM, AND IT NEVER RECOVERED BECAUSE IT WAS A CONTINUOUS PROGRAM WITH THE 2024 PROGRAM.

THERE WAS ALSO A SLIGHT DROP WITH THE JULY 4TH WEEK.

THE NEXT WEEK WAS MORE, UH, PARTICIPATION THAN EVEN THE WEEK BEFORE JULY 4TH.

AND IT, IT JUST KEPT GROWING.

AND IT WAS WITH ALL AGE GROUPS.

SO WE COULDN'T BE MORE EXCITED ABOUT THIS.

UM, YEAH, I WAS JUST GONNA SAY THAT YOU HAD, BECAUSE I KNOW YOU WERE EXCITED WHEN WE LOOKED AT THIS, FILLED WITH THIS BECAUSE EVEN 2019 PRE COVID OF ONLY HAVING 1400 PEOPLE SIGN UP AND STILL ONLY HAVING 526 PEOPLE COMPLETE THE PROGRAM.

WE'VE EXCEEDED OUR PRE COVID NUMBER WITH THIS SUMMER PROGRAM, AND WE HAD MORE PEOPLE COMPLETE THIS THAN SIGNED UP.

YEAH.

SO IT'S, IT'S EXTREMELY, IT IS A SUCCESS FROM BEGINNING TO END, EVEN IF, UH, WE HADN'T SURPASSED THAT 2019 NUMBER, BUT WITH ALL OF THE DIFFERENT FACTORS INVOLVED AND WITH THE, BECAUSE I WILL, I WILL BE HONEST WITH YOU, THE, UM, STAFF DID NOT TAKE TO THIS.

THEY DIDN'T BECAUSE IT WAS SUCH A .

BUT AT THE END OF THE, THE PROGRAM, THE FEEDBACK FROM STAFF WAS VERY POSITIVE.
