I TEACH AT, UM, SAMUEL HIGH SCHOOL IN PLEASANT GROVE, WHICH IS AN EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL. SO WE HAVE STUDENTS WHO GO TO EASTFIELD MM-HMM . UM, AND SO I HAVE, UH, A VERY DEEP INTEREST IN PRESERVING THIS ASPECT OF THE COMMUNITY AND MAKING SURE THAT WE HAVE THESE RESOURCES AVAILABLE FOR OUR COMMUNITY. BUT, UH, WHEN WE MARRIED 56 YEARS AGO AT [00:05:01] FIRST BAPTIST GARLAND, I DE FACTO BECAME A GARLAND RESIDENT, UM, BY, BECAUSE HER PARENTS WERE VERY, VERY, VERY ACTIVE IN THE COMMUNITY. AND, UH, WE MOVED BACK HERE 25 YEARS AGO TO TAKE CARE OF THEM. AND, UM, I WAS A JOURNALIST, STILL AM A JOURNALIST, UH, AND I WORKED FOR THE HOUSTON CHRONICLE A NUMBER OF YEARS. BUT I'VE WRITTEN FOR MORE THAN A HUNDRED PUBLICATIONS AROUND THE WORLD. UH, AND I'VE, I'VE DONE A NUMBER OF BOOKS, CO-AUTHORED A LOT OF BOOKS, AND I HAVE, UM, WRITTEN A FEW ON MY OWN. MY WIFE HAS ACTUALLY WRITTEN MORE. SHE'S ALSO A JOURNALIST. UM, AND SO THE WRITTEN WORD IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT IN OUR FAMILY. UM, WE'RE STILL WORKING TOWARD THE CERTIFICATE OF OCCUPANCY. WE ACTUALLY SHOULD HAVE THAT, UM, EITHER TEMPORARY CERTIFICATE OR, UM, MAIN CERTIFICATE WITHIN THE NEXT, CROSSING MY FINGERS A FEW DAYS. UH, MAYBE JUST A TOUCH LONGER THAN THAT. AND YOU DO HAVE THE GRAND OPENING DATES SET FOR SATURDAY OCTOBER 25TH, WHICH IS VERY EXCITING. SO, UM, THIS PROJECT IS UNIQUE, DIFFERENT FROM CENTRAL IN THAT WE HAD A DEDICATED OPENING DATE COLLECTION THAT WAS CURATED FOR WEST, UM, THAT WAS DELIVERED. WE'VE HAD OUR, UH, REALLY BIG PUNCH WALK. UM, NOW THEY'RE GOING THROUGH THE PROCESS OF ADDRESSING ALL THE DIFFERENT ITEMS THAT WERE FOUND DURING THAT PUNCH WALK. UM, AND THESE ARE LITTLE THINGS THAT, THAT NEED TO BE ADDRESSED UP TO, TO SOME LARGER THINGS THAT THEY'RE WORKING ON. UM, CONSTRUCTION, UM, ACTUALLY LAST WEEK WE BEGAN, AND IF YOU'VE BEEN TO WALNUT CREEK, YOU KNOW THIS, UM, WE, WE STARTED THE PROCESS PROCESS WITH LIBRARY INTERIORS OF ACTUALLY MOVING CONTENTS OF WALNUT CREEK OVER TO THE NEW FACILITY OF WEST, UM, WEST GARLAND LIBRARY. MM-HMM . SO RIGHT NOW, IF YOU GO INTO WALNUT CREEK, THERE IS A VERY SMALL SELECTION OF ITEMS ON THE SHELVES. UM, WE KEPT THE A HUNDRED MOST POPULAR ITEMS THAT CIRCULATES THE MOST, ALL OF THE NEW ITEMS IN DVDS. 'CAUSE UH, WE DO GET A LOT OF USAGE OR DVDS GET A LOT OF USAGE AT WALNUT CREEK. UM, THERE ARE, UH, WE HAVE SUSPENDED PROGRAMS IN SEPTEMBER, UH, RIGHT NOW IN ANTICIPATION OF GETTING EVERYTHING MOVED OVER, EVERYTHING READY FOR THAT GRAND OAK. SO ALL THE DIFFERENT MATERIALS THAT WERE AT WALNUT CREEK, THEY PUT THEIR HANDS ON ALMOST ALL OF THOSE, UM, MENU VOLUMES THAT WERE ON THE SHELVES. AND THEY MADE A DETERMINATION, DOES THIS ITEM GET MOVED TO WEST, UM, OR DOES IT GET MOVED TO A DIFFERENT LIBRARY LOCATION? AND WE MADE THAT DETERMINATION, UH, BECAUSE WE WERE ABLE TO, UM, CURATE AN OPENING DAY COLLECTION SPECIAL FOR WEST. SO THE BULK OF ALL OF THE ITEMS THAT WILL BE ON THE SHELVES THAT WEST ARE BRAND NEW ITEMS, WHICH IS A REALLY IMPORTANT THING IN A BIG OLD MM-HMM . FOR A NEW LIBRARY. SO, UH, JUST KNOW IF, IF SOME OF THE ITEMS DON'T MAKE IT FROM A WALNUT TO WEST, THERE'S A LARGE NUMBER THAT ARE GONNA BE SENT TO OTHER LOCATIONS, UM, TO BE ABLE TO, TO BE CIRCULATED. SO WE WORK WITH A GROUP, UM, IT'S LIBRARY INTERIORS OF TEXAS. THEY, UM, PROVIDE FURNISHINGS AND MOVING STORAGE FOR, UH, LIBRARIES, ACADEMIC SPECIAL PUBLIC LIBRARIES. UH, THEY HAVE A REALLY AWESOME SYSTEM THAT THEY COME IN. UM, THEY, THEY LITERALLY TAKE EVERYTHING OFF THE SHELF, THEY SHRINK WRAP IT, THEY PUT IT ON A TRUCK, THEY MOVE IT, AND THEN THEY PUT IT BACK ON THE SHELF IN ORDER , WHICH IS SUCH A BIG DEAL, . UM, BUT THEY WERE ABLE TO TAKE THAT ENTIRE COLLECTION AT WALNUT AND MOVE IT WITHIN THREE DAYS, PACK IT, MOVE IT, AND PUT IT ON THE SHELF. THEY'RE AN AN AMAZING TEAM, SO I HIGHLY RECOMMEND . I HIGHLY RECOMMEND LIBRARY INTERIORS OF TEXAS. BUT THESE ARE SOME OF THE, UM, THEIR BOOK TRUCKS THAT THEY [00:15:01] USE AND HOW THEY'RE ABLE TO SECURE 'EM ON A TRUCK. SO THE ART PLAZA HAS THESE GIANT BOULDERS AND THERE'S ACTUALLY A COUPLE COLORS NOT HERE THAT GOT DELIVERED LAST WEEK. UM, THINK IT'S LIKE AN ORANGE GOLD COLOR, UH, AND MAYBE ONE OTHER COLOR GREEN, A DARKER COLOR. UM, BUT THESE BOULDERS ARE PUT AROUND THE KIND OF THE SOUTHEAST AND THE, UH, NORTHEAST SIDE OF THE BUILDING TO OFFER SEATING. UM, KIND OF DO A PLAY IN BETWEEN THE REC CENTER AND, AND THE LIBRARY TO, TO BRING IN A WHOLE CAMPUS FEEL. UM, AND IT'S, I THINK WE WERE DISCUSSING BEFORE THE MEETING THAT THE COLORS, UH, OF ALL THE BOULDERS AND THE RIBBON THAT'S THERE FOR SEATING, UM, ARE VERY INTENTIONAL WITH, UH, WEST GARLAND LIBRARY. BUT THEY ALSO COMPLIMENT THE COLORS THAT HALABA HAS AT, AT THAT REC CENTER. AND THERE'S SOME BEAUTIFUL PIECES OF GLASS IN HALABA THAT HAVE, OR COLORED GLASS AND ALL OF IT SORT OF MATCHES AND COORDINATES WITH ONE. IT'S VERY PRETTY. UM, IT'S HARD TO SEE HERE, BUT THERE ARE THESE, UH, VERY TALL BOLLARDS FROM ABOUT HERE UP. THEY'RE NOT BUBBLE BY THE WAY YOU GO BUBBLE . UM, THEY LIGHT UP. AND THAT TOOK ADVANTAGE OF OUR MASCOT CURIOSITY, THE CAT. AND, UM, SO WE USED THAT ON ALL OF THE BRANDING AND THE, UH, ACTIVITY TRACKERS. AND ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WERE, THE CURIOSITY, UH, ON EACH OF THE TRACKERS WAS A DIFFERENT ARTIST. AND SO THE ARTIST [01:00:01] WAS, UH, UH, FRIDA, WAS IT KOTLOW? UH, IT USED THE, THE, THAT'S RIGHT. WE HAD THE CLUB CURIOSITY FOR ZERO TO AGES ZERO TO 17, AND THEIR CAREGIVERS FOR, WE DIDN'T HAVE A PROGRAM FOR A SUMMER PROGRAM FOR ADULTS BECAUSE WE FOUND THAT THERE'S NOT AS MUCH ACTIVITY. SO WE FOCUS THE, FOR THE ADULTS ON ONE BOOK, ONE GARLAND, AND WE INVEST IN THAT FOR THE ADULTS. BUT FOR THE ZERO TO 17, WE HAD WEEKLY ACTIVITY TRACKERS AND THEY WOULD PICK ONE UP AND, UH, FILL IT OUT AND THEN RETURN IT. AND, UM, THEY WERE ABLE TO GET PRIZES. WE ALSO HAD LIBRARY PROGRAMS AND THEN OUR SUMMER PERFORMERS THAT WE ALWAYS HAVE. AND WE HAD THE PEROT TECH TRUCK, THE JAMES W MAGIC SHOW, DALLAS ZOO, THE RAMINI. AND WE HAD THOSE AT EACH LOCATION EXCEPT FOR CENTRAL, BECAUSE WE WERE STILL AT PLEA CENTRAL LIBRARY EXPRESS. SO FOR CENTRAL, WE HAD THAT EITHER ON THE SQUARE OR WE HAD THAT AT THE, UM, WAS IT, YEAH, THE ATRIUM. SORRY. UM, WENT BLANK THERE. WHICH IT WAS REALLY AWESOME TO WORK WITH SOME OF OUR YES. THEY GET TO, UH, USE SOME OF THE TECHNOLOGY MAKING LITTLE ROBOTS. AND, UM, THEY DID, UH, WROTE PROGRAMS TO CREATE, UH, ANIME PROGRAMS. UH, THEY DID FAUX STAINED GLASS AND KITCHEN LITHOGRAPHY. AND I LOOKED UP KIT KITCHEN LITHOGRAPHY AND IT WAS, UH, MAKING THEIR OWN ART PRINTS BY USING, UH, FOIL AND PAINTING THE FOIL AND PUTTING A SOLUTION OVER IT THAT THEN LOOSENS IT. AND THEN THEY PUT THE PAPER ON IT AND PRESS THE PAPER AND IT COMES UP. AND SO WE, AGAIN, IT GOES WITH THE ART AND THEY GET TO DO SOMETHING HANDS ON. AND IT'S SOMETHING THAT, THAT IS REALLY FUN THAT THEY LIKE TO, KIDS LIKE TO DO THESE, UM, HANDS-ON PROJECTS. WE ALSO HAD, FOR THE OLDER, FOR THE TEAMS, WE HAD VIRTUAL REALITY EXPLORATION WHERE THEY HAD THEIR, THE VR GOGGLES AND THEY, WE HAVE SOFTWARE THAT THEY GET TO USE, UH, AND PLAY WITH THAT. WE HAD THE PUNCH NEEDLE ART, WHICH WAS WITH THE CANVAS WHERE THEY ARE PUNCHING THE, THE THREAD THROUGH THE, THE CANVAS AND THE ALWAYS POPULAR SLIME PARTY. UH, WE ALSO HAD, FOR THE FAMILIES, WE HAD COSMIC GLOW GOLF, WHICH LOOKS REALLY COOL. AND THEY'VE GOT THEIR, UH, REALLY COOL CREATIONS THAT THEY GET TO TAKE HOME WITH THEM. SO, SO AS I MENTIONED EARLIER, THERE WERE ACTIVITY TRACKERS AND IT WAS GROUPED OF ZERO TO FIVE, SIX TO 12, AND 13 TO 17. THEY WERE GIVEN OUT EACH WEEK. SO THEY STARTED OUT, THEY ALL, THEY RECEIVED ONE, THEY BROUGHT IT BACK. UH, THEY WERE ABLE TO, UH, GET A TOKEN THAT THEY COULD THEN PUT IN WHAT LOOKED LIKE A LARGE BUBBLE GUM MACHINE. IT WAS A BIG HIT. AND THEY THEN GOT THE LITTLE, UH, PODS THAT HAD THE TOY IN IT THAT THEY LIKE. AND WHEN THEY DID THAT, THEY ALSO WERE ALSO GIVEN THE NEXT, THE, THE ACTIVITY TRACKER FOR THE NEXT WEEK. WE DID HAVE THE TRACKERS AVAILABLE IN ENGLISH, SPANISH, AND VIETNAMESE. AND SOME OF THE THINGS THAT THEY WERE KEEPING TRACK OF WAS READING. AND FOR THE YOUNGER ONES, IT WAS BEING READ TO. WE, UH, WE GOT FEEDBACK THAT IT WAS VERY HELPFUL WHERE THEY LEARNED OR THEY KNEW WHAT THEY, UH, WERE SUPPOSED TO DO. SO WE HAD A TOTAL OF 1,648 ACTIVITY TRACKERS RETURNED DURING THE PROGRAM PERIOD, WHICH WAS END OF MAY TO AUGUST 2ND, WHICH IT'S A 5% INCREASE COMPARED WITH PREVIOUS YEAR. UH, SIMILAR TO THE PREVIOUS YEAR WE HAD THE AGES SIX TO 12 RETURN. THE MOST TRACKERS, WHICH I THINK THAT HOLDS TRUE WITH, WITH MOST OF THAT'S THE MOST ACTIVE GROUP YOU'RE GOING TO GET IN THERE, THAT ARE GONNA BE INTERESTED IN, UH, READING PROGRAMS OR ACTIVITY PROGRAMS. BUT THIS, THIS NEXT ONE, HAVING A, AN INCREASE OF 59% IN THE ZERO TO FIVE AGE GROUP, HAVING THEM RETURN THE, THE, THE TRACKERS IN THAT AGE GROUP. AND THAT TIES IN AND TRACKS WITH THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE IN THAT AGE GROUP THAT ARE ATTENDING OUR PROGRAMS. AND IT IS ENCOURAGING THAT WE ARE, YOU KNOW, KNOWING THAT WE ARE ON THE RIGHT TRACK AND THE TYPES OF PROGRAMS THAT WE'RE PRESENTING AND THAT WE ARE PULLING THAT, THAT AGE GROUP IN AND THE PARENTS IN OR THEIR CAREGIVERS IN. SO, UH, DEFINITELY SOMETHING WE WANT TO CONTINUE. [01:10:02] THE PERFORMER PROGRAMS AT ALL OF THE LI LIBRARIES DREW RECORD CROWDS, AND THAT'S EVEN WITH CLEA. AND I WILL SAY, UM, BECAUSE A LOT OF THE PROGRAMS WERE DUPLICATED, WE WERE, WE ARE ABLE TO TELL THE PATRONS THAT IF THEY'RE AVAILABLE ON A DIFFERENT DAY, YOU KNOW, WE ARE GONNA HAVE IT AT A DIFFERENT LOCATION. SO, UM, FOR THE MOST PART, THESE, THEY'RE NOT JUST TURNED AWAY AND THEY DON'T HAVE ANY OTHER OPTIONS. THEY CAN SEE THE SAME PROGRAM AT ANOTHER LOCATION. BUT AGAIN, THIS IS A VERY EXCITING THING FOR US TO SEE THAT WE ARE HAVING THAT MANY PEOPLE COME TO THE PROGRAMS. SO E EACH YEAR WHEN WE ARE PUTTING THIS TOGETHER, WE WANNA FOCUS ON THE WHY, WHY ARE WE DOING THIS? AND IT'S FOR THE BENEFITS THAT SUMMER PROGRAMS PROVIDE. AND THEY KIND OF BREAK THAT UP INTO THE DIFFERENT AGE GROUPS. SO, AS I MENTIONED ON THE TRACKERS WITH HAVING THE EARLY LITERACY, UH, ACTIVITIES THAT THEY CAN DO, THAT IS WHAT YOU WANT TO DO. YOU YOU WANT TO HELP PARENTS WITH EARLY LITERACY FOUNDATIONS AND THESE PROGRAMS HELP THEM. SO IT HELPS, UH, PARENTS WITH THEIR CHILDREN TEACHING THEM VOCABULARY, PRINT AWARENESS, PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS, AND THROUGH STORY TIME AND PLAY. AND IT PROVIDES THEM OPPORTUNITIES TO STRENGTHEN CAREGIVER CHILD BONDING, MUCH LIKE OUR STORY TIMES DO. AND OUR, OUR, UH, PLAY AND LEARN PROGRAMS. AND IT GIVES THEM CONFIDENCE IN USING EARLY LITERACY PRACTICES. GIVES THE, THE ADULTS THE CONFIDENCE IN USING THE EARLY LITERACY PRACTICES TO TALK, SING, READ, WRITE, AND PLAY WITH THE CHILDREN. AND IT GIVES THE CHILDREN THE CONFIDENCE TO USE THESE TECHNIQUES TOO. AND IT PROMOTES SCHOOL READINESS. UH, YOU HAVE ROUTINES. YOU, THEY COME TO OUR PROGRAMS AT STORY TIMES AND, AND, UM, WORKING WITH THEIR PARENTS, UH, ROUTINES, ATTENTION AND SOCIAL EMOTIONAL SKILLS. SO THERE'S A LOT OF SCHOOL READINESS IN THE PROGRAMS THAT WE DO FOR THAT AGE, FOR ELEMENTARY AGE KIDS, UH, IS, I THINK MANY OF US HAVE HEARD OF THE SUMMER SLIDE . AND SO THAT IS ONE OF THE LONG TIME GOALS OF THE PROGRAMS THAT THE LIBRARIES HAVE OVER THE SUMMER. AND THAT'S TO, UH, PREVENT THE SUMMER SLIDE, KEEP THE KIDS READING AND HAVE THEM RETURN TO SCHOOL. HAVING HAD THAT WHERE THEY ARE FEELING MORE CONFIDENT GOING INTO THAT SCHOOL YEAR WITH THE TYPES OF PROGRAMS THAT WE HAVE, LIKE WITH THE STEAM AND THE HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES THAT IT BOOST THEIR CURIOSITY AND PROBLEM, PROBLEM SOLVING ABILITIES. AND WE HAVE THIS, AGAIN, NOT JUST WITH SUMMER. WE HAVE THIS ALL YEAR LONG. AND THEN IT HELPS INCREASE LIBRARY ENGAGEMENT FOR BOTH THE CHILDREN OF THAT AGE AND FOR THE ADULTS HAVING THE CHECKOUTS. YOU HAVE RETURN VISITS AND YOU HAVE PROGRAM PARTICIPATION, WHICH IS GOOD FOR ALL OF US. FOR TEENS, THE PROGRAMS THAT WE HAD FOR THEM. UH, LIKE THE VIRTUAL REALITY WITH THE, ANY TYPE OF MAKERSPACE PROGRAMS, IT HELPS DEVELOP THEIR 21ST CENTURY SKILLS, CREATIVITY, COLLABORATION, AND COMMUNICATION. IT, UH, PROVIDES AN AWARENESS OF LIBRARY AND COMMUNITY RESOURCES THAT, WHETHER IT'S DURING THE SUMMER OR DURING THE SCHOOL, THIS IS IMPORTANT FOR THEM TO BE AWARE OF WHAT LIBRARIES OFFER. AND IT HELPS GIVE KI PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS GREATER CONFIDENCE IN SUPPORTING THAT LEARNING. AND IT HELPS REDUCE VERY IMPORTANT SUMMER COSTS WITH FREE STRUCTURED PROGRAMS AND, UH, OPTIONS BECAUSE, UM, WE DO NOTICE THAT WITH THE ECONOMY, AS IT GETS WORSE, THE ATTENDANCE TENDS TO GO UP.
