THAT LIBRARY MASTER PLANS HAVE ALLOTTED DIFFERENT THINGS FROM PROGRAMS, STAFFING, UM, THE TECHNOLOGY, UH, COLLECTION, DEVELOPMENT, ALL THESE DIFFERENT FACETS THAT WERE A PART OF THAT PLAN.

WE HADN'T UPDATED THAT PLAN IN A NUMBER OF YEARS, SO IT WAS REALLY PAST TIME FOR US TO LOOK AT THAT PLAN.

UM, BUT THE BIG CORE THINGS THAT CAME OUT, UH, ESPECIALLY AS IT DEALT WITH, UH, ACCESSIBILITY FOR HOW OUR BUILDINGS ARE CONSTRUCTED, UM, WHAT WE PROVIDE DIFFERENT PIECES OF THE COLLECTION THAT WE PROVIDE.

'CAUSE PEOPLE LEARN IN DIFFERENT WAYS, UH, THE DIFFERENT, DIFFERENT PIECES OF THE COLLECTION THAT CAN HELP FACILITATE THAT.

OUR LIBRARY PROGRAMMING AND PARTNERSHIPS.

AND WE'RE GONNA TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT OUR LIBRARY PROGRAMMING AND PARTNERSHIPS.

PARTNERSHIPS ARE INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT FOR US TO BE ABLE TO BRING IN, UM, ADDING VALUE TO, TO WHAT WE ALREADY OFFER, LIBRARY TECHNOLOGY, AND THEN A VERY BIG KEY COMPONENT WITH STAFF TRAINING, UH, THAT WE PROVIDE FOR OUR STAFF TO BE ABLE TO GO BACK AND, AND DO A LOT OF DIFFERENT THINGS THAT WE WERE NOT DOING BEFORE.

SO IN OUR BUILDINGS, ACCESSIBILITY ACTUALLY STARTS WITH US, US THINKING ABOUT HOW PEOPLE USE OUR FACILITY.

SO, FOR OTHER LIBRARIES, SOMETIMES THAT CAN BE REALLY HARD BECAUSE WE, WE PROVIDE SERVICES FOR ALL PEOPLE, ALL AGES, ALL WALKS OF LIFE.

UH, WE'RE TRYING TO LOOK THROUGH THINGS WHEN WE'RE, UH, MAKING RENOVATIONS OR CONSTRUCTING A BUILDING THROUGH THE LENS OF A LOT OF DIFFERENT PEOPLE.

SO FOR A CHILD, WHAT'S IMPORTANT FOR A CHILD TO BE ABLE TO HAVE YOU HAVE A MOBILITY ISSUE AND WE'RE CONSTRUCTING A BUILDING, WHAT'S A WAY THAT WE CAN HELP MINIMIZE THE BARRIER THAT IF YOU HAD A MOBILITY ISSUE COMING INTO THE BUILDING, WE COULD HELP MITIGATE THAT.

UM, ON DOWN TO FURNITURE PATHWAYS, HOW THE SHELVING IS CONFIGURED, WHERE THE SHELVING IS CONFIGURED, UH, ALL, IT ALL PLAYS A HUGE ROLE.

WE TAKE A LOT OF TIME IN TRYING TO DEVELOP THE OVERALL LAYOUT AND FUNCTIONALITY OF THE BUILDING.

UM, ALL OF OUR BUILDINGS, WHETHER WE'RE DOING THE RENOVATION OR IT'S A NEW BUILD, WE GO THROUGH A DA AND TEXAS ACCESSIBILITY STANDARDS FOR USE THAT TASK, UH, REVIEW WHICH TASK IS MORE, UM, STRICT THAN THE ACTUAL A DA, UH, RULES THAT WE GO ABOUT.

UM, AND THEN I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT FOR TWO OF THE BUILDINGS THAT WE'RE WORKING ON OR HAVE WORKED ON, ONE OF OUR ARCHITECTS ACTUALLY EMPLOYS, UH, AN ACCESSIBILITY EXPERT, UM, TO HELP FACILITATE SOME OF THE, THE PROCESS AND HELP REVIEW SOME OF THE THINGS, THE DECISIONS THAT ARE MADE FROM THAT ACCESSIBILITY STANDPOINT.

SO, JUST TO GIVE YOU SOME EXAMPLES, UM, THIS BUILDING IN PARTICULAR, WE DID A COMPLETE OVERHAUL.

AND INITIALLY WHEN WE STARTED LOOKING AT RENOVATING THIS BUILDING, WHICH IS ALL OUTLINED IN THE MASTER PLAN AS WELL, WE, WE HAD A FEW REALLY BIG THINGS, AND I'LL SAY BIG TICKET ITEMS THAT WE WANTED TO IMPROVE.

ORIGINALLY, THE FRONT ENTRANCE WAS RIGHT OVER HERE, NOT THAT FAR.

IF YOU WERE PARKING YOUR CAR IN THE WEST SIDE OVER IN THE EAST SIDE, EVEN IN FRONT, AND TRYING TO MAKE YOUR WAY OUT OF YOUR CAR, GET TO A SIDEWALK, MAKE ALL THE WAY TO THE FRONT DOOR, IT WAS, I THINK WE LIKE MEASURED IT AT ONE POINT.

IT WAS LONGER THAN A FOOTBALL FIELD IN FRONT CASES TO BE ABLE TO MAKE THAT TRACK.

THEN GETTING INTO THE FRONT, UH, THE FRONT DOOR OF THE BUILDING AND GETTING TO A SERVICE DESK WAS ANOTHER LONG HAUL TO BE ABLE TO DO THAT.

AND THEN GETTING TO, IF WE WERE HAVING A LARGE PROGRAM, THIS ACTUAL SPACE WAS LOCATED IN FAR BACK REACHES OF THE BUILDING, NOT CLOSE TO ANY PARKING.

SO YOU HAD TO GO FURTHER BACK INTO THE BACK OF THE BUILDING.

WELL, IF YOU ARE USING A CANE, USING A WALKER, IF FROM A USABILITY STANDPOINT, UM, YOU KNOW, YOU HAVE SOMEONE WHO HAS A MOBILITY ISSUE, SOME OF

OUR ELDERLY PATRONS, UM, BOND OR DADS WITH MULTIPLE CHILDREN, YOU'VE GOT BAGS.

YOU BUY THINGS, IT'S HARD TO GET IN THE BUILDING WHEN YOU'RE HAVING TO PARK ALL THE PAPERS HERE AND CHECK IN.

SO WE MADE A CASE FOR WANTING TO READ FORWARD THAT THE, THE FRONT OF THE BUILDING TO THE WEST LINE AND JUST , LIKE, WE'VE GOTTEN A LOT OF THAT FOR THAT.

IT JUST MAKES SENSE.

BUT THIS WAS A BIG NEWS THAT HELPED MOVING THIS ROOM AND THE WAY THAT IT'S USED AND HOW WE USE IT TO THE FRONT OF THE BUILDING, UH, TO MAKE IT EASIER FOR PEOPLE TO BE ABLE TO GET IN, UH, ALSO HAS HELPED A LOT.

AND THEN THERE WERE A COUPLE OF REASONS WE WANTED TO MOVE THE BUILDING.

ONE WAS FOR ACCESS TWO WAS BECAUSE THIS ROOM ALSO GETS SOMETIMES USED FOR BEFORE OR AFTER HOURS FOR PROGRAMS WITH DIFFERENT GROUPS THAT ARE USING IT.

AND WE HAVE A WAY TO BE ABLE TO LOCK OFF THE DETECTION WITH RESIDENT WITH WATER FOUNTAINS WITH AN EXIT, UH, AND STILL KEEP THE LIBRARIES LOCKED IF IT'S BEFORE OR AFTER HOURS.

UM, LOOKING AT LIKE OUR DESKS, WE WANTING TO MAKE SURE THAT IF IT'S ON THE CHILDREN'S LEVEL, THAT IT'S, IT'S CERTAIN HEIGHT TO BE ABLE TO BE ACCESSIBLE FOR CHILDREN, BUT ALSO FOR ADULTS.

WE'RE TRYING TO REALLY, UH, MAKE ALL OF OUR SERVICE POINTS USER FRIENDLY NO MATTER UNDERSTANDING OR SITTING.

UH, AND WE'RE REALLY CAREFUL ABOUT THAT.

ONE OF THE THINGS THAT, UM, WE SPENT A A LOT OF TIME ON FOR ALL OF THE, THE SHELVING HERE AND THE SHELVING THAT WE HAVE AT WEST, ESPECIALLY IN THE ADULT COLLECTION.

ORIGINALLY WE HAD 90 INCH SHELVING, UM, FOR ADULTS, WHICH IS QUITE TALL, QUITE TALL.

UM, WE HAD KICKSTANDS ALL OVER THE PLACE, WHICH THAT'S A RISK LIABILITY AS WELL.

YOU'RE HAVING TO GET UP ON A STOOL TO BE ABLE TO DO SOMETHING UP ON THOSE TOP TWO SHELVES.

WE ACTUALLY LOWERED THE SHELVES TO 60, 66 INCHES AND THEN BOUGHT NEW SHELVES FOR THE BOTTOM ABOVE SHELF .

SO YOU CAN SORT OF READ BETTER THE, THE MATERIALS ON THAT BOTTOM SHELF TO READ THE SPINE OR UP LIKE THIS THAT ARE JUST LIKE THIS.

SO OUR ARCHITECT IS REALLY AWESOME IN HELPING US LOOK AT SOME OF THOSE LITTLE DETAILS THAT END UP MAKING A REALLY BIG DIFFERENCE WHEN PEOPLE ARE SEARCHING THE SHELVES.

UM, AND THEN ONE OTHER HIGHLIGHT I'LL I'LL MENTION IS IF YOU'VE BEEN DOWNSTAIRS TO THE CHILDREN'S FLOOR AROUND THE STAIRCASE, WE HAVE THESE LITTLE READING BOOKS THAT ARE BUILT INTO THE STAIRCASES.

THEY'RE ADORABLE AND THEY'RE FUN, THEY'RE ALWAYS FILLED UP.

BUT WE ALSO ADDED ONE OF THOSE BOOKS THAT'S EXCESSIVE IN FOR A CHILD THAT MAY BE IN A WHEELCHAIR.

SO THEY CAN STILL HAVE A UNIQUE AND FUN EXPERIENCE AND HAVE THAT INFLUENCE SPACE EVEN IF THEY CAN'T CRAWL UP INTO ONE OF THE, THE OTHER SPACES.

SO OUR LIBRARY PROGRAM PARTNERSHIPS, OUR GOAL IS TO CREATE A WELCOME ENVIRONMENT FOR ALL OF OUR USERS.

UM, AND THE PROGRAMS AND THE PARTNERS THAT WE HAVE OUT IN THE COMMUNITY HELP US BE ABLE TO DO THAT.

WE HAVE A REALLY AWESOME NETWORK OF OTHER PROFESSIONAL LIBRARIANS, EDUCATORS, AND EXPERTS IN THE FIELD THAT HELP US BE ABLE TO PROVIDE THESE IN OUR COMMUNITY.

SO ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE REALLY DO IS WE, WE WORK AND HAVE A GREAT PARTNERSHIP WITH GISD, UM, AND SOME OTHER LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS, BUT WE TRY TO TAKE ACCOUNT, UH, IF GISD IS SEEN A RISE OR A DECLINE IN A PARTICULAR, UM, SERVICE FOR, UH, STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS, WE TRY TO TAKE THAT INTO CONSIDERATION FOR, FOR TRAINING ON IT AND SEEING WHAT PARTS OF THE COLLECTION DO MAY WE NEED TO AMEND TO PROVIDE SERVICE FOR AT THEIR PROGRAM THAT WE NEED TO START TAILORING AND THEN PROVIDING SERVICES FOR.

JUST TO GIVE YOU AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT THAT LOOKS LIKE BACK IN 20 18, 20 19, UM, THEY REALLY STARTED TO INCREASE THE SERVICES FOR, UM, STUDENTS, UH, THAT ARE NEURODIVERGENT, UM, AND THAT HAVE DYSLEXIA.

AND IT'S, IT'S A GREAT PARTNERSHIP , BUT WE'RE TRYING TO GET TO A PLACE THAT WE'RE, UM, WE'RE NOT REACTING, UH, AS A LIBRARY PROVIDE FOR THAT NEED.

WE'VE DONE AN AMAZING JOB WITH, UH, I THINK PROVIDING MATERIALS, UH, AND PROGRAMS, ESPECIALLY FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES.

IN THE PAST YEAR, YEAR AND A HALF, WE HAVE BEEN TRYING TO, UM, EXPAND THAT PROGRAMMING FOR ADULTS AS WELL.

UH, THIS WAS ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS THAT WE DID, AND THIS WAS ACTUALLY AFTER HAVING SOME CONVERSATIONS WITH SOME DIFFERENT COMMUNITY MEMBERS ON WHAT, UH, A PROGRAM THAT THEY WOULD BE INTERESTED IN COMING TO.

SO WE DID SENSORY AFTER HOURS THAT ALL FOUR LOCATIONS WERE OPEN IN THE EVENING AFTER THE LIBRARY WAS CLOSED, IT WAS, YOU SIGN UP FOR IT, OKAY, YOU CHECK YOUR ID AT THE DOOR, DOOR KIND OF, WHAT IS IT, THE, THE VELVET ROPES THAT YOU GET TO GO BEHIND.

AND IT REALLY PROVIDED A QUIETER AND CALMER ATMOSPHERE FOR SOME OF THESE INDIVIDUALS TO COME IN AND EXPERIENCE THE LIBRARY.

AND IT WAS A GREAT BURNOUT.

WE HAD, UM, BOTH ENGLISH AND SPANISH LANGUAGE STAFF, UH, HERE TO BEING ABLE TO HELP FACILITATE THAT, OR WE ISSUED LIBRARY CARDS.

WE WANTED IT TO MAKE IT A REALLY WELCOMING AND FRIENDLY PLACE WHERE, ESPECIALLY CENTRAL, ESPECIALLY SOUTH, THERE'S IT DIFFERENT TIMES OF THE DAY.

THERE'S A LOT OF MOVEMENT, A LOT OF NOISE, A LOT OF WONDERFUL CONTROL, CHAOS THAT HAPPENS AT THE LIBRARY, UH, WHICH MAY BE COUNTERINTUITIVE TO WHAT A PUBLIC LIBRARY OFFERS.

SO TRYING TO PROVIDE THAT, THAT MORE COMFORTABLE SPACE WAS THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT.

UM, AND THEN SOME OF OUR PROGRAMS ARE NOT NECESSARILY PROMOTED, UM, DISABILITY SPECIFIC.

SO THIS IS OUR FAMILY PLACE, UM, PROGRAM.

OUR SOUTH CAROLINA LIBRARY HAS A VERY SPECIAL DESIGNATION.

WE'VE GONE THROUGH THREE YEARS OF TRAINING JUST TO RECEIVE OUR ACCREDITATION TO BECOME A FAMILY PLACE LIBRARY.

THIS IS A REALLY COOL PROGRAM THAT PROVIDES, UM, A SPECIAL COLLECTION, UH, RESOURCES, UH, DIFFERENT PROGRAMS, REALLY TARGETING CHILDREN AND FAMILY FROM ZERO TO TO FIVE, BUT WITH A CONCENTRATION ON ZERO TO THREE.

THIS PROGRAM INVITES, UH, FAMILIES TO COME.

YOU'LL COME FOR LIKE SIX OR EIGHT WEEKS, BUT THERE'LL BE DIFFERENT EXPERTS THAT COME.

SO IT COULD BE SOMEBODY, THE MEDICAL PROFESSION, A NUTRITIONIST, UH, WE'VE HAD DENTISTS COME, WE'VE HAD SOMEONE, UH, WITH, UH, CHILD AND BEHAVIOR COME.

AND IT GIVES THE PARENT A A CHANCE TO BE ABLE TO INTERACT WITH THEIR CHILD, BE WITH THEIR CHILD WITH AN EXPERT, AND KIND ASK THE EXPERT SOME QUESTIONS IN A SAFE ENVIRONMENT, UH, TO BE ABLE TO SEE LIKE, IS MY CHILD READING THE, UH, NOT THE BENCHMARKS, BUT THE, UH, THE DEVELOPMENTAL MILESTONES, LIKE THEY SHOULD BE.

UH, WE'RE HOPING THAT THEY, THEY HIT.

YEAH, THIS IS A PRETTY POWERFUL PROGRAM.

AND I'LL SAY FOR ALL OF OUR CHILDREN'S PROGRAMS, UM, THIS HAS HELPED GIVE PARENTS THE INFORMATION IN SOME COMPARISON OF LIKE WHERE THEIR CHILD WAS AT TO OTHER CHILDREN.

AND JUST AS AN EXAMPLE TO REALLY ILLUSTRATE THAT THIS DID NOT HAPPEN IN OUR LIBRARIES, BUT IN ANOTHER PUBLIC LIBRARY.

UM, THERE WAS A MOTHER WHO, IT WAS HER FIRST CHILD WHOSE CHILD WAS A TODDLER.

SHE CAME TO ONE OF THE PROGRAMS FOR, UM, SMALL CHILDREN AND NOTICED THAT ALL THE OTHER CHILDREN WERE MAKING NOISES.

UM, COULDN'T UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY WERE SAYING, BUT THEY WERE MAKING NOISES AND, AND INTERACTING.

HER CHILD WASN'T MAKING ANY NOISE YET.

AND IT WAS A CLUE FOR HER THAT THERE MAY BE SOMETHING THAT SHE NEEDED TO, TO ASK HER DOCTOR ABOUT.

SHE DID.

AND THERE WAS A, THERE WAS SOMETHING, UM, THERE WAS SOMETHING WRONG.

BUT THAT INTERACTION AND THAT ENVIRONMENT FOR HER TO BE ABLE TO COME IN AND THEN HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH AN EXPERT AND THEN REACH OUT AND GET SOME HELP FROM HER FAMILY DOCTOR WAS REALLY PART OF WHAT HELPED HER BE ABLE TO PROVIDE THE, THE NECESSARY HELP FOR HER CHILD, WHICH SHE WAS ABLE TO DO.

AND SHE WAS THRILLED WITH IT.

SHE SAID IT HAPPENED AT THE LIBRARY.

IT WAS AWESOME.

IT STILL MAKES ME LIKE TEAR UP .

AND THEN WE HAVE OTHER THINGS LIKE WE, UH, PARTNER AND HAVE GREAT CONNECTIONS.

SO THE TALKING BOOK PROGRAM IS A, UM, FEDERAL AND STATE PROGRAM THAT WE CAN HELP HOOK UP DIFFERENT PEOPLE WITHIN THE LIBRARY ARE ACTUALLY ONE OF THE PLACES THAT WE CAN SIGN THE, THE DOCUMENTATION FOR YOU TO, UH, QUALIFY FOR THIS PROGRAM.

SO THIS ONE'S A FOUR WEEK PROGRAM JUST FOR TEAMS. IT WAS, UH, STEAM RELATED, BUT THE, THE TEAMS CAME IN.

UM, UTB UH, TEAM CAME AND WORKED THIS GROUP OF TEAMS TO UNDERSTAND, LIKE, UH, THE WHOLE GOAL WAS TO CREATE SOMETHING THAT WOULD HELP, UM, SOMEONE WHO WAS SUFFERING FROM A, A MOBILITY ISSUE BE ABLE TO COMPLETE, UH, AN EVERYDAY TASK EASIER.

AND SO THE FIRST DAY THEY WERE HERE, THEY WENT THROUGH AN EXERCISE TO LEARN LIKE WHAT OR EXPERIENCE, WHAT HAVING A CERTAIN DISABILITY WOULD, WOULD FEEL LIKE, AND TRY TO PUT THEM IN, IN THEIR SHOES OVER ADVANCE OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF WEEKS.

THE TEAMS ACTUALLY, THEY, THEY GOT TO BRAINSTORM.

THEY GOT TO MAKE SOME DIFFERENT PROTOTYPES AND ACTUALLY COME OUT ON THE END WITH, UM, USING OUR MAKER SPACE.

THEY ACTUALLY GOT A , SOMETHING, UM, THAT WOULD HELP SOMEBODY WHO WAS EXPERIENCING, UH, SOMETHING THAT WOULD, UH, WHAT WAS THEY, UH, IMPROVE SOMETHING IN THEIR DAILY LIFE.

I THINK THEY ENDED UP CHOOSING.

THEY DID, UM, THEY ENDED UP WANTING TO DESIGN SOMETHING THAT HELPED, UH, WITH, UM, GRIP.

SO SOMEONE WAS HAVING PROBLEMS GRIPING SOMETHING.

UM, THEY WANTED TO HELP IMPROVE THAT.

NOW THEY, THIS WAS NOT THE ONLY COMMENT.

THIS IS ONE OF THE, THE FAILURES THAT THEY MADE, BUT I THOUGHT IT WAS REALLY COOL.

THEY HAD THE CHANCE TO ACTUALLY EXPERIENCE SOMETHING.

UM, AND THEN IN THE END, THEY, THEY ACTUALLY DID MAKE PROTOTYPES, UH, SUBMITTED THOSE PROTOTYPES TO UTE, AND I THINK THEY'RE

WHEELCHAIRS ARE EXPENSIVE, AND HE 3D PRINT PARTS OF THE WHEELCHAIR THAT TO GROW WITH HIM UNTIL, YOU KNOW, AS A FULL ADULT, THAT HELPS TO CUT DOWN ON COST.

BUT THEORETICALLY YOU COULD DO THAT IF THE LIBRARY JUST THROUGH THE, THE 3D PRINTER AND, UM, FINGER CAP, WHICH IS PRETTY COOL.

BUT I THOUGHT THIS WAS A REALLY GREAT EXAMPLE OF IT GAVE THESE KIDS A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE, HELP THEM BE ABLE TO PROBLEM SOLVE AND HOPEFULLY HAVE A PRODUCT ON THE OTHER END THAT'S BENEFICIAL.

AND IT WAS, IT WAS AWESOME TO SEE HOW EXCITED THEY WERE ABOUT, UM, HAVING ACCESS TO THE, IT WAS A REALLY COOL VAULT.
